JOHN KOLOCHUK With his family at his side, John passed away at the Health Sciences Centre on January 14, 2013 due to complications from Parkinson's disease and recently lung cancer. John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Olga, his son Len (Cathy), grandson Jon, step-granddaughter Jade and step-great-grandchild Lily. He is also survived by three sisters, Beatrice, Florence (Mac) and Olga (Wally), also by sister and brothers-in-law Vicky (Lawrence), Jean (Boris), Wally (Jean), Mike (Ruth), Peter (Gertie), Bill (Ursula) and Tony, and many special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Dale, parents Nick and Ann, brother Mike and sister Marie. John married his wife Olga in 1962 and together they resided in Charleswood where they raised two sons. He loved sports, never missing a Winnipeg Jets game with his friend Emil. Soon both boys were involved in hockey and baseball at Varsity View with John coaching and cheering them on. Every available weekend in the summer was spent at the lake fishing, boating and swimming. For 35 years John worked in the automotive industry at Western Engine, the last ten years as shop foreman. In 1986, John and Olga purchased a small hobby farm in St. Francois Xavier. John retired in 1991 and went full tilt into breeding and racing thoroughbreds. He trained his own horses at the Downs from 1992 to 2012 and the last year was very difficult for him. The horses were very important to him and he never missed a day of training. He loved the Backstretch life. In his younger years John loved dancing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, quading, building his own dune buggies, field work on his tractor and especially jogging the horses behind the quad getting ready for spring training. He also enjoyed perogy suppers at St. Basils Church and going to Tim's for coffee. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to CancerCare, Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. John's family would like to thank Teri at Health Sciences Centre SICU for the compassion shown to us while he was on life support. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of John's life will take place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue at 2:00 p.m on Saturday, January 19, 2013. John was a great trainer and loved his wife kids and being around the race track. He was always full of smiles and was always on the go. Every morning he will yell good morning as I was walking past or emptying my wheel barrel and laugh if it was windy cause straw would blow right back at me. John had a good year in racing last year was so happy for him. We connected one day when I told him I was from ste rose and our farm was in Rorkten Manitoba. John I Will miss you very much this coming race season. - Posted by: Jen (Friend ) on: Jan 17, 2013
