FLORENCE JULIA BELL (nee WEBB) Peacefully and after a short illness, Florence Julia Bell passed on to her next journey, Saturday, January 19, 2013 with her family and friends from Kildonan Personal Care Home by her side. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Val (Warren) Barker, son Geoff (Nicole) Bell, grandson Jared (Hollis) Kauble, step-grandson Brad (Colleen) Barker and beloved great-grandchildren Addie and Callum Barker. Flo was predeceased by her husband Charles (Dinger), parents Arthur and Annie Webb, and brothers Stan Webb, George and Johnnie Ralston. Mom was born December 5, 1920 in Dugald, MB where she lived until she graduated from the Provincial Normal School as a teacher. Beginning her career in 1939, Mom spent three years teaching in rural schools near Dugald and three years at Maple Leaf School in Morden, MB. In 1944, Mom met and married Dinger, who was stationed with the Royal Air Force in Carberry, MB. The following year she travelled to England where she taught in Manchester for two years. They returned to Winnipeg in 1949 where she taught the next five years at George V School. From 1955 to 1969, she operated a Kindergarten in her home in East Kildonan. When Kindergarten was established in River East Schools, she began teaching at Lord Wolsley School where she remained for 24 years. Nine of those years required commuting to Polson School for afternoon classes. Mom treasured her 51 years of teaching, retiring at age 72. She was devoted to her kids and took pride in shaping the start of so many lives as a Kindergarten teacher. As a young girl she was a great softball player, won many horseshoe contests and later in life loved to watch sports on TV especially her Winnipeg Blue Bombers and of course, any figure skating competition. Next to teaching, Mom's one purpose in life was to be a wife and mother and having us later in her life, she loved every minute she could be with her kids. She was always there to help or provide a shoulder for us to lean on. We were all the light of her life and she made us feel very loved. Many thanks to the Concordia Hospital ER and the 3rd floor staff (Michelle, Wendy, Kathy and all). Your professionalism, compassion and concern for Mom was profound, which made the stressful moments easier as we knew she was in such good hands. Thank you also to Dr. Duprat for your gentle care and treatment as you fought so hard to help Mom to recover and then helped us as she transitioned to her final journey. For the family that Mom adopted in the Kildonan Personal Care Home, words are hard to find to express our sincere thanks for all you did and how well you treated her. You are Angels and we are all so grateful there are people like you that make our loved ones comfortable in their twilight years. To Joyce, James, Ashley, Simarjit and Willard, you were with us at the end and you made the time to say good-bye a loving and peaceful moment. We can't thank you enough. Kim, Alan, Linda, and all of the Angels we don't even know - we Thank You. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, if you so desire, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. "A Mother holds her children's hands for a while, their hearts forever and ever..." You were the best Mom and Grandma to us all and we will love and miss you forever. Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111

  • Mrs. Bell was a wonderful person and a great teacher and mentor. She taught my son in kindegarten many years ago and she was very patient and kind - her students learned very quickly with her loving guidance. It was as if she was family as that's how much she cared. She was truly interested and treated everyone with kindness and respect. It was great to know you Mrs. Bell! - Posted by: Donna Eastoe (My son was her student) on: Jan 31, 2013

  • Mrs. Bell was my one of my very favourite teachers. She was always caring and kind and quick to hand out a hug to a distressed child. She was one of my 1st teachers and I will always remember her. Heartfelt condolences to your family. - Posted by: Lynn LeRoy (Former Student) on: Jan 29, 2013

  • Val and Geoff, I will never forget the many kindnesses my sister and I received from your Mum and Dad. The world is a poorer plce without them. - Posted by: Irene Findlay. (Neighbour) on: Jan 29, 2013

  • I attended your mother’s home kindergarten and I can remember fun times like churning buttermilk to make homemade butter. And arts & crafts with our smart little smocks to keep us clean. And graduation – it was most memorable and I can still see myself standing alongside my co-students, all decked out in our finest with hand-crafted graduation caps. I attended the morning class – I believe it was class of ’67-68 because I was so disappointed that I had to miss a couple weeks of classes to go with my family to Expo in Montreal that fall. My sister came along 3 years later but had to go to Angus McKay because home classes had ended. When I drive by our old house and then back up the hill on Mossdale I’ve always slowed down a bit just as I passed your mother’s home bringing back a flood of many great memories. Please accept my sincere condolence on your mom’s passing – you should be very proud of the accomplishments and lives she touched. - Posted by: Cathy Evanyshyn (former studen) on: Jan 29, 2013

  • I worked with Florence in her kindergarten class at Lord Wolseley and enjoyed her so much. She was such a great teacher and co-worker. Always so pleasant and just so wonderful with the little ones. My sincerest sympathies to Val and Geoff. Sorry will not be able to attend service as I am out of the country for some time but my thoughts and prayers will be with you. - Posted by: Lorraine Pockett (worked with Florence at Lord Wolseley School ) on: Jan 28, 2013

  • Sorry to hear of your mom's passing Geoff. I remember going there for kindergarten in your home just up the lane from my house. - Posted by: glenn beckett (former student) on: Jan 27, 2013

  • What a lovely tribute to Florence, she would be so pleased. I taught with Flo at George V School, what a great time we had, moving into the new annex, getting engaged and married and Flo and Dinger buying their home. I think I was the first to see it, they were so excited. A few years later Flo encouraged and guided me as I established my own Kindergarten. We both ended back in the classroom but I have to admit I quit at 65. Family, work, further education demanded our attention so friends were lost but not forgotten. My condolences to the family, your Florence was a very special lady. Rest in peace Flo. - Posted by: Marie Mac Donald (Former colleague and friend) on: Jan 27, 2013

  • Just this morning, I was reminiscing over some old photos & came across my Kindergarten graduation pics. Not half an hour later, I came across her obit. I am sorry for your loss & send you hopes of peace & strength at this difficult time. I was one of the very lucky children that attended your Mom's home school in 1968. They say grade one is the most memorable year of school, but for me it was definitely kindergarten. Probably because of how very special Mrs Bell was to me & all of us that went to her school in the basement. I clearly remember the bright red painted tables & chairs (that your Dad made & painted), the fire drills (got to climb the ladder to go out the basement window - what a thrill), the birthday parties, the awesome learning & of course our graduation. She made/painted us all hats & diplomas. Two years after I attended her school, my younger brother became K age & I felt sorry for him because Angus McKay had implemented a kindergarten class & he would not have the same opportunity as I did. I will never forget your Mom, she was a very kind, caring/loving, generous woman. I aspired to be like her when I grew up. The sky is now one star brighter at night as she flies with the angels ♥ God Bless. xo Sincerely, Lisa Gerus-Moodie Class of 1968 - Posted by: Lisa Gerus-Moodie (Kindergarten Student) on: Jan 27, 2013

  • Some of my fondest memories of being a little girl were with Mrs. Bell at Lord Wolseley, I was in the very first kindergarden class held there and can still picture the room and Mrs. Bell at circle time. We shared a birthday and I still have the Christmas book she gave me and signed. it is now in a special box with my own children's Christmas books that we pull out every December. Rest in peace Mrs. Bell, - Posted by: Sheryl {Mainella} McCartney (Former student) on: Jan 27, 2013
