ERIC ALBERT GILLATT
Date of Passing: Jan 30, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryERIC ALBERT GILLATT With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather at the age of 88 on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 with his family by his side. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Margaret, his children, Donald (Louise) and Barbara Wansbutter (Richard), his grand-children, Nicholas Wansbutter (Monika) and Jessica Stothers (Aiden), and his great-grandchildren, Marcel, Klara, Dominika and Lewis. Also surviving are his sister, Janet Yorke (Art) and brother, Clive (Leone) and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Eric was born in Winnipeg on December 2, 1924. He enlisted in the Air Force in December, 1942 and served in the Eastern Air Command. Following the war, he returned to Winnipeg where he met the love of his life, Margaret, while both were singing in the Young Church choir and they married in June, 1950. He began work at Air Canada in 1951 and continued there until he retired as Manager of Payrolls in 1978. Eric was very active in the community as a scout leader, choir member and held many positions at St. Mary's Anglican Church. He enjoyed his summers at Victoria Beach and 11 years living in Vernon, BC where he and Marg had a wonderful circle of friends. He was a marvelous father and grandfather, who was always ready to play games. Eric was a kind and gentle man and was loved by all who knew him. Eric spent his last few months in the Charleswood Care Centre. The family would like to thank special friend Fae and all the staff on wing six especially Lois and Lisa and his roommate, John, who made his days so bright. A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 4 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Blvd. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Eric's memory to the Canadian Diabetic Association would be greatly appreciated. Eric and Marg were the first people to welcome us to Charleswood and to St Mary's Church. That was 50 years ago but their kindness (and their beautiful voices) have never been forgotten. My thoughts are with all of Eric's family at this time Jan Jones (late husband, Bev) and family. - Posted by: Janice Jones (Fellow Charleswood Resident) on: Feb 04, 2013

Eric was a close friend of my mum and dad Doris & Dave Bain. He and his family also helped me out when I was raising funds for a Team Diabetes event. I had the pleasure of taking care of him while he was a patient at Deer Lodge. My condolences & prayers go out to Marg and the rest of the family. We were saddened to read of Eric's passing. He will be remembered as a good man - always smiling - always easy with laughter -dedicated to family, church & community. I recall the challenges & the fun we all had at St. Mary's during those Medieval Banquet days. Blessings, Leslie - Posted by: Leslie Pelser (Friend from the past) on: Feb 04, 2013

Mr. Gillatt, Eric, gave the toast to the bride at my wedding in 1980. He was a very special individual and provided optimism at a very formative time in my life. His loss will leave a very large hole in many lives. Thinking of Marg, Barb, Donald, and the rest of the family at this sad time. - Posted by: Lauren Mulhall (family friend) on: Feb 03, 2013

I am so sorry for your loss. It does not matter whether it is expected or not, it is very hard to accept. The boys will always remember the fishing trip to Anglican Island. I will remember what good friends you were to Norm and I and the fun we had playing pool amongst the pipes on Alcrest. My love to the whole family. - Posted by: Lynn Greaves (Friend) on: Feb 02, 2013

I just wanted to say that i only knew Eric for a short time (since my Dad was admitted to Charleswood and was fortunate to have Eric as a roommate)....we often commented how fortunate our Dad was to have such a wonderful man as a roommate...He was a very kind person who our Dad spoke very highly of. We are very sorry for your loss! - Posted by: Debbie Ewert (daughter of John Neufeld) on: Feb 02, 2013
