IAN GLENDOWER PLANT On January 31, 2013, Ian William Glendower Plant died at Deer Lodge Centre. Born August 26, 1932 to Eric and Vi Plant of Cheshire, England, Ian grew up in Winnipeg, attending Riverview, Robert H. Smith and Kelvin High schools. He studied chartered accountancy at the University of Manitoba and joined Burroughs Business Machines, peddling business equipment and winning sales awards for 10 years. In 1966 he joined The Smith Agency Ltd. where, with his partners Dick Smith and later Tom Smith and David Ross, he nurtured the family business. He retired in 1987, maintaining an office as an advisor. Ian was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity, where he met many of his life-long buddies. He also joined the Winnipeg Winter Club, the Manitoba Club and Taylor Tennis. He was passionate about skiing with family and friends, enjoyed tennis and squash, and was an avid cyclist and power walker. He spent his summers at Victoria Beach, cycling to and from Grand Beach. He downhill skied all over North America and in Europe. In later years, he trekked at Mount Engadine, AB. He enjoyed lunch with the guys and loved his rum and coke. He hated golf. Ian served on the boards of the Manitoba Opera and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He chaired the Winnipeg Regional Housing Authority, sat on United Way committees and volunteered for the Kiwanis club. He looked forward to his monthly meetings with the Premium Investments group. Ian is survived by Donna (Smith), his wife of 54 years, son Donald (Barbara) of Kelowna, daughter Mardi of Winnipeg, son Stuart (Hanaa) of Winnipeg, grandchildren Zoe and Simon of Kelowna and step-grandsons Owen and Ben. He leaves his nephew Andrew Savage, nieces Susan Savage and Janet Savage of Calgary, and cousin Ngaio Kidwell of Liverpool, England. He was predeceased by his sister Jocelyn. A service of celebration will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in April. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish to make a contribution in Ian's memory, please make it to: Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 256 Smith St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1K1; the Laura Milner White Fund, in care of The Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0X3; or the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, Unit 10/120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. Special thanks to Edgar Estabal, who Ian called "trouble" with a smile. Ian Plant had a warm chuckle and loved to tease. He was a sweet, kind gentleman.
