MARGARET ROBINS Margaret passed away peacefully the evening of Thursday, January 31, 2013 at the age of 86 years. She will be greatly missed by her children, Ann (Vern) and David (Sheila); grandchildren, Kara (Tom), Riley and Kelsey; great-grandchildren, Sophia and Reid; sister Monica in Wales, and nieces and nephews in the UK and the US. She was predeceased by her husband, Harle Duncan Robins in 2007, her parents John and Margaret O'Sullivan, and by granddaughter Laura Alicia Robins. Peggy, as she was known to friends and family, was born April 28, 1926 in Port Talbot, Wales and then worked as a nurse at Chelsea Hospital in London during the war. After the war, Peggy and her mother travelled to "America" as she used to say, to visit her sister Joan in Toledo, Ohio. There was a nursing shortage so a short visit to America turned into a very long stay. Two years later, she and her nursing friends set off to Thunder Bay for a weekend of fun and dancing. While there she met a handsome young pharmaceutical rep from Winnipeg by the name of Harle. It was love at first sight and Harle began to pursue this lass from Wales. Harle and Peggy were married in Winnipeg in 1954 and Peggy went to work as a nurse at the Winnipeg General Hospital and then the Cancer Foundation as it was called back then. They began to raise their family in Fort Garry and Peggy has remained close friends with the Welchester Avenue neighbours ever since. Peggy and Harle were amazing grandparents and took an active role in the lives of grandchildren Kara, Riley and Kelsey. There were years of before and after school snacks and card games, jigsaw puzzles and all the grandchildren know how to say "here is the news and weather in Wales in Welsh; which is what she remembered hearing on the radio every" evening as a child. Grandma always made the best oatmeal, always had a knee available to bounce on, and would always slip some money in your pocket on the way out the door, (as long as you didn't tell Grandpa.) She was thrilled when great-grandchildren Sophia and Reid were born and considered them absolutely beautiful and completely brilliant. Their home was a gathering place for children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and neighbours and was filled with love and bran muffins for anyone who dropped by. Peggy had a passion for reading, language, news and politics. She was a whiz at crossword puzzles. She was never stumped and would have the Free Press jumble done in half the time of anyone else. She held strong opinions on the affairs of the world, government and social justice. Many a debate and many stories were shared over grilled cheese sandwiches and yam fries at the Sals. Peggy was someone you would never forget once she shared a good story or her contagious laughter with you. She will be remembered and forever missed by all who came to know her. In keeping with her wishes there will be no formal service and cremation has already taken place. Family and friends will be invited to a gathering at a later date to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made in Margaret's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
