ELSIE SOLAR (nee GENIK) B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed. The family announces the passing of Elsie Solar on February 1, 2013 at Seven Oaks Hospital. Elsie was born on Christmas Day, 1931, in Dauphin, Manitoba to William and Ann Genik. After taking teacher training and vocational mail courses in Business Education she began teaching in Swan River, Dauphin and then Winnipeg. While teaching she took night courses and earned her B.Ed. and M.Ed degrees. She retired in 1991 from Garden City Collegiate after teaching Business Education for many years. Elsie greatly enjoyed teaching high school students. Elsie married her high school sweet heart, Melvin Solar, on May 22, 1954. They raised two sons, Grant (Yvette) and Todd (Brittany). Elsie travelled extensively with Melvin, including Hawaii, Hong Kong, Thailand, Europe and cruises. On summer weekends Elsie spent time at their cottage at Lake Nutimik. Elsie leaves two grandchildren, Kevin and Justine who were very precious to her. Elsie loved cooking and baking, making traditional Ukrainian dishes, and especially for her grandchildren. Elsie is survived by her sons, grandchildren, daughter-in-law, Yvette, her brother Nicholas (Sylvia) and members of Mel's family, Lawrence and Betty, Helen, Mary and Don, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family thanks the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital for the wonderful care they gave Elsie. Memorial service will be held at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Avenue, Friday, February 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Elsie's memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We'll miss you and you will always be in our hearts. Vichnaya Pamyat Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • Having had quite a troublesome child/teenhood, I learned to trust elders once again through meeting dear Elsie before she became my teacher. I was blessed the day Elsie and her family became my friends. Elsie always inspired me to believe in myself, to never give anyone power over me, have friends who made mr feel good. These are characteristics that have been with me since. I wanted to become a teacher. I did become one, not the traditional teacher, but a foster mom. Elsie was a very gentle and sweet person. In my typing class we admired and lovingly respected her. We called her "Mrs. Sun", because even through our rough days she managed to make us smile, a few words of kindness, a tap or few on our shoulders, she reassured us that never give up. I could keep writing there were many good times and conversations of me teaching her how to sew, or her wanting me to draw her a picture for the cabin. Grant and Todd, I am so sorry for your loss. This truly saddens me. Being so very ill for so long, I hadn't found this loss until just now. Fresh sadness is overwhelming. Sincere prayers and thoughts to you all. Elsie was very well respected and loved by many. Her legacy will be carried on with the many lessons of life she taught so selflessly. Thank you Elsie for being such a huge part of my life. • I remember Elsie as a very loving and caring aunt. She was always just a phone call away if I needed someone to talk to, for advice or support. We had been out of touch for some years but had reconnected and I really was grateful that we had. Her and Uncle Mel were very special people. My sympathies to her sons and their families (my cousins). Let us continue to keep in touch. - Posted by: Kris Sinclair (Niece) on: Feb 20, 2013

  • Mrs. Solar taught my typing class her last year teaching at GCCI, on those giant black typewriters that weighed more then me. She was a sweet woman and a caring teacher. - Posted by: Natasha Machalek-Holmes (former student) on: Feb 05, 2013

  • Mrs. Solar as we fondly called her in school was of great encouragement to me as I took my High School Education. Mrs. Solar's encouragement helped me to want to improve in my subjects that she taught me. I found her to be so very kind and helpful to all the students that wanted to do their best. So sorry to her family to have lost such a lovely lady, mother, grandparent. May you always draw on your good memories to help you through these difficult times.
