Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN FREDERICK BRAND August 12, 1933 February 6, 2013 With his wife by his side and surrounded by the love of his family, John Brand passed away peacefully at Concordia Hospital on Wednesday, February 6. Dad was born and raised in the Netherlands. He was proud to have served in the Royal Dutch Marines. He immigrated to Canada in 1954 at the age of 21. He worked at a number of different jobs before being hired as a teller at the Bank of Toronto. Dad met Mom while working at the bank. They were married in 1961. Dad worked very hard to support family. He was promoted to more challenging positions within the bank which took the family from Winnipeg to Brandon, Saskatoon and Regina. In 1986 Dad took early retirement from the bank. There was a huge career shift when Dad became a corrections officer at Stony Mountain. It was a job that he thoroughly enjoyed. Family was very important to Dad. Every summer we went camping. It was a wonderful way to spend time together. On rainy days, Dad taught us to play cribbage and later challenged us to crib games which he usually won. When personal computers were quite new and novel, Dad bought a computer and became very proficient. In the very early days of the internet and email he used his skills to reconnect with family and friends in the old country. Dad truly enjoyed a fiery discussion; the more challenging the better. He held strongly to his position but would also listen to and question other people's opinions to better comprehend the issues. It was not uncommon to hear him say "We've solved the world's problems, if only someone would listen." Being raised in the Dutch Reformed Church, Dad had a very strong Christian faith. He and Mom joined regular Bible Study groups where again he asked many questions to gain deeper understanding. Dad was predeceased by his parents, his brother and sister. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 51 years, Norine, his daughter Audrey and her husband Larry Labelle of Winnipeg, his daughter Lois and her husband Doug Doran of Regina as well as his grand-children Trevor, Jessica and Stuart. He will also be missed by his brothers and sisters-in-law as well as many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Dad's life will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Place of Grace Church, 1040 Beach Avenue. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 www.nbardal.mb.ca

My deepest sympathy Norine. He was a special man. I had some very deep conversations with John. He was never shy to say what he believed. It's good to know where he is, but he will be deeply missed. - Posted by: Del Bruneau (Friend) on: Feb 08, 2013
