Date of Passing: Feb 12, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDORIS SKAKUN (NEE OSESKY) Peacefully just two weeks before her 91st birthday, Doris passed away with her son and daughter-in-law by her side on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Doris was predeceased by her loving husband Harry and numerous family members. She is survived by her son Brian (Deanna Doran), grandson Daren, granddaughter Tracy-lynn, and Great Grandchildren Raymond, Brooke, Savana and Pierson as well as two older sisters, Marj (99), Cay (93) and baby brother Ted (87). Doris was born in Lennard, Manitoba in 1922 and came to Winnipeg in 1939 where she worked as a housekeeper and nanny. In 1942 she married Harry. Doris worked in many different jobs until she retired at age 55. She was not happy staying at home, so she volunteered at Poseidon Care Centre feeding, telling stories or taking the residents for a walk. She continued going everyday until February 8, 2013 when she took ill. Doris worked tirelessly at her church, St. Ivan Suchavsky Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. She spent most of her spare time helping with all church functions. She was a founding member of the church perogy club that started in 1967. The last few years she answered the perogy order phone with a cheery hello for everyone. Doris was the perogy ambassador and promoted her perogies to everyone she met. Doris enjoyed performing for any occasion whether it be a Santa or a clown, she loved being in the spotlight spreading cheer. Doris will be greatly missed. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, February 19, at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Doris was the wonderful lady that sold me perogies and fall supper tickets at St. Ivans Church for the past 5 years. She always made sure I got the supper tickets I needed. I met Doris when I visited my Aunt Margaret in Poseidon Centre. Doris had a heart of gold and was a ray of sunshine when she stepped in the door. She never failed to greet my aunt and say a few words and sing a short song in Ukranian. If she had time we would chat a while. My aunt loved those visits from Doris and it brightened her day considerably. Doris was one in a million and she will be missed. Sincerest of condolences to the Family. Although Grandma had many years under her belt, her sudden passing was a shock to the everyone. Of course it is especially hard on her son Brian. He was a great Son to her and the love and bond that they shared will leave a huge void in his life for sure. Again, condolences to all the Family. - Posted by: John Rohde (Grandson in-law) on: Feb 17, 2013

Grandma Skakun was truly a one in a million person. Completely selfless in her compassion for her fellow man and her dedication to brighten their lives with her volunteer work and simple acts of kindness. She was my Grandma through marriage and was the Great-Grandmother of my children. To many people, in-laws can be a source of frustration. To me, right from the beginning, she was the kindest and sweetest woman, so warm and generous. She always made me feel like she was my Grandma and I have always thought of her that way. I will miss you Grandma..... - Posted by: John Rohde (Grandson in-law) on: Feb 17, 2013

Doris touched my family's life for over 25 years. My mother arranged for her to be a caregiver at Poseidon for my grandmother in 1986 and she looked after her tirelessly until my grandmother's death in 1991. They had become very close. Then when my own mother was admitted there in 2007, I recognized Doris and she happily took on the role yet again for my mother and continued to do until Doris' passing. Knowing that Doris was with my mother most days of the week gave our family such peace. I will always remember her love, compassion and generous spirit. What a beautiful woman. - Posted by: sandra (friend) on: Feb 16, 2013

Aunt Doris (Do Do) was a kind Aunt, I recall all the wonderful visits we shared at my Mom and Dad's Farm Residence in Pine River. We shared many family gatherings which I will always have very fond memories of my Aunt. Aunt Doris, you had a kind heart to many residents in the Care Homes and your Church and Perogie making stories will always remain with us. Rest in peace, your love of life will shine upon all of us. I extend my deepest sympathies to Brian, Deanna, Tracey Lynn and your family. From Cousin: Doris Dunfield - Posted by: Doris Dunfield (niece to Doris Skakun) on: Feb 15, 2013
