CATHERINE MILDRED RUSSELL July 7, 1952 - February 12, 2013 Peacefully, on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, our beloved sister, aunt, and great-aunt passed away, at the age of 60, with her loving sister at her side. Born in Winnipeg on July 7, 1952, to Gerald and Mildred Russell, Cathy was predeceased by her parents, Gerald in 2006 and Mildred in 2012. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Debbie (Terry); brothers, Doug (Lori) and Wilf (Yvonne); nieces, Jessie and Laura (Michael); nephews, Chris and Chad (Jessica); great-niece, Ada; as well as cousins and friends. Cathy was a wonderful spirit, a loving and caring person, treasured by relatives and friends alike. As a physiotherapist, Cathy spent most of her life helping others. Early in her career, Cathy worked several years at the St. Amant Centre, followed by many years at the Misericordia Hospital. Later, Cathy worked as a lymphedema therapist at the Breast Health Centre, working with breast cancer patients. Cathy leaves a legacy of helping others, generous with her time, dispensing her own special brand of CathyCare to all in need. Sadly, after years of helping others deal with cancer, Cathy herself succumbed to cancer, certainly before her time, but not without a courageous and determined battle driven by a positive never-give-up attitude. Cathy had a special relationship with her nieces and nephews. She didn't miss a concert or dance event. She had a wonderful imagination and encouraged the same in her nieces and nephews through her use of made-up stories and pretend activities. Cathy attended theatre and the ballet for many years and loved to take her nieces to see the Nutcracker Suite every Christmas. She loved the cottage and gardening, a special time with her Dad. Get-togethers and birthday celebrations would not have been complete without Cathy there to document the event with photos. For years, she was an active member of Fort Garry and St. James United Churches. We, the family wish to thank everyone who gave Cathy their friendship, their support, and their valuable time during her struggles over the past months. A private family interment ceremony will be held at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens on Tuesday afternoon, February 19, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m., with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or The Breast Health Centre, 100-400 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 3C3. Cathy, you will always be fondly remembered with our eternal and endearing love. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

The memory I have of Catherine was that she was so full of life and always so positive. After she told me she had cancer she showed a fighting spirit even with the knowledge that the future did not look promising. Fiesty and fun are two other words that come to mind when I think of Catherine. I am truly sorry for your deep loss of a great person who will be greatly missed by those around her. I was saddened to hear of the passing of the wonderful Catherine Russell. Cath was my physiotherapist for lymphedema for a few years. I first met her for physiotherapy in 1998 after my first mastectomy. Luckily, at that time I didn't need much therapy from her. Then in 2008, I had the opportunity to meet her again, this time requiring more therapy for lymphedema after having a second mastectomy. She was a good physiotherapist--knowledgeable, experienced and, most importantly for me, full of compassion and caring for her patients. She had a warm, strong and confident way about her that made me relax. I knew I was in good hands. I enjoyed the chats we had during my appointments so much. She was interesting, intelligent and thoughtful. The time went too quickly and now she's gone from this place. I hope she is in some fantastic place now, filled with all the comfort and peace she gave to us here. My condolences to her family and friends. She was one of the good ones. - Posted by: Kathleen Hays (Patient) on: Feb 17, 2013

My dearest Debbie, Life may have taken us in different directions but I will never forget the wonderful times I had with you and your family, especially Cathy. The clearest memories are of her tremendous smile and infectious laughter. I want to extend my very deepest sympathy to you, Debbie and your family. I'm sure it has and will be a difficult time for you. I hope you know that I think of you often and that my thoughts and prayers are with you now. Distance and many years separated us from you, Cathy. We have fond memories of you as a child and young woman in our extended family in Winnipeg years ago. We remember your warmth, your wonderfully cheerful ways and your love of life. We are sure that your kind and nurturing spirit touched many lives, both professionally and personally, throughout your journey and you will be greatly missed by friends and family. You were a generous and loving woman and will be treasured in memory by all who knew you. Your Aunt Helen and Cousins Steve and Terry - Posted by: Teresa Chadwick (Cousin) on: Feb 16, 2013
