PAUL HERMAN HERKERT 1915 - 2013 It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of Paul Herkert, our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather on February 9, 2013 at Grace Hospital at the age of 97 years. Dad was predeceased by his wife Jean, his parents Herman and Katherine Herkert, and brother Fritz Herkert. Dad will be lovingly remembered by son Paul, daughters Marlene, Sandra (Kent) Coleman, and Dianna (Barclay) Oliphant, and by his grandchildren Tara Lea, Jamie, Christopher, Greg, Tammy, and Craig; great-grandchildren Hannah, Aaron, Ashton, Kieran and Julian. He will also be sadly missed by his brothers Otto and William Herkert. Dad was born in Strahn, Illinois and came to Canada when he was six years old. His parents settled in the Sanford, Manitoba area and there he made his home for the rest of his life. Dad was a hardworking man who was happiest when he was engaged in farming and watching the seeds he planted fill his fields and gardens. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits and to family gatherings. He will always be remembered by all who knew him for his gentleness, generosity and kindly ways. He will be missed by his companion Hubie. Thanks to Starbuck Home Care team for providing care and compassion to Dad and allowing him to remain in his home for as long as possible. Thanks also to the staff at Grace Hospital for their support. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice. Funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue on Thursday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m. with interment and reception to follow. • My condolences to all the Herkert family on their loss, Paul was my Grandfather's brother and was my neighbor for many years, he will be missed. I remember Paul stopping by Grandpa Fritz's on Christmas day, Paul was dressed as Santa Claus (although I didn't know it was him at the time) with a bag full of gifts for us kids. Later in life I asked my parents who was Santa all those years and they told me how many of the Herkert guys would switch each year playing Santa so us kids would have a great holiday. Thanks Paul for being my Santa Claus and taking time out of your Christmas to help make mine memorable. - Posted by: Melissa King (extended family) on: Feb 21, 2013
