Date of Passing: Feb 18, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERT FREDERICK (FRED) RUTLEDGE 1943 - 2013 Peacefully in the early hours of February 18, 2013, Fred Rutledge passed away at the Grace Hospital with loved ones by his side, at the age of 69. He is predeceased by his mother Gwen and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his daughter Paula (Rita) and their daughter Caycie; his son Rob (Tina) and their son Reid, as well as many cousins, family members and friends. He is also survived by his friend Betty Munro (Cam) and their daughters. Fred was born and raised in Selkirk, MB. Although born an only child, Fred was lucky later in life to be connected with his long lost half-brothers Ron and Gary Rutledge who reside in Florida, USA. He knew from a young age that he wanted to be a lawyer. After attending United College, Fred went on to graduate from the University Of Manitoba Faculty Of Law in 1968. He established his own practice in St. James with fellow law graduate Frances Labbus and thrived. Betty came to work for Fred in 1978 as his paralegal and remained with him until his passing. She was cherished and part of his family. Fred loved to socialize and made friends easily. He was a member of St. Charles Country Club where he enjoyed golf and entertaining. He travelled to many places in his life such as Hawaii, Las Vegas, Australia and especially Mexico. Watching baseball was a passion of Fred's. A long time baseball fan, Fred was always prepared to provide updates on the progress of the Toronto Blue Jays. The love for baseball took him and his son Rob on a trip east in 1993 to watch games in Toronto, Baltimore, Boston, and New York. Fred had a true love of the law and was a lawyer through and through. He lived life to the fullest and will missed by many. A celebration of his life will take place at the Assiniboia Downs, 3975 Portage Ave., Winnipeg on Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. A very special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Grace Hospital on 3N and the ICU. Your caring and kindness is truly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grace Hospital Foundation, The Salvation Army, and Heart and Stoke Foundation of Manitoba. I met Fred for the first time in 1985. I had sent him a few deals while I was working at Block Bros., but had never met him. He had come to our new Re/Max office for a wine and cheese in his curly permed red hair and polyester suit. He had come bearing gifts for Pat Slobodian who I was sharing an office with and I asked where's mine. The next day there was a bottle of Crown Royal on my desk. That was the beginning of my almost 30 year relationship. In 1987 we moved our office to the Country Club Plaza on the third floor and Fred and company moved next door. We had smokes together and saw each other almost everyday for 20 years. We became very close, yes Fred was my best friend, he was like a dad to me too. We both sought each others opinions often. Our talks on the phone.....that went on and on..... Fred was so smart, one of the smartest people I knew. Fred came for Christmas dinner, Thanksgiving dinner..... We had many dinners at Hys, Rae and Jerrys, and especially the St Charles country club course. The lobster night, Chinese night, birthday dinners..... Once our office moved from his building we did not see each other as much but the visits I made to him in the hospital after his surgery and to his home I will never forget. Old friend I loved you so much. I miss you Joanne - Posted by: Joanne Gebauer (Friend) on: Nov 24, 2019

Dear Fred When we last chatted in January you said you'd phone me in back in July. It's when I decided to call you that I discovered you'd pulled out before the last inning! From the joys of Miss Klym "Please watch how I do this". Playing at your place and looking at auntie's stamp collection. Never to forget was how fast you were on your feet. In Grade IX when Mallon used his 'Gorgeous George' as a rule example for hard and soft "g"s and you immediatly shot back with 'finger' [as vinger] we all knew you would do law or politics and so did you! I remember the weekend in Stony Mountain 1n 1960 and the supper at your place in 2002 after doing Dad's estate. "You've brought flowers and a bottle of wine. Didn't I charge you enough?" I especially remember the week I spent with you in 2011. I'm really going to miss not having our next get together which we'd planned for the summer of 2014. My love to Betty and I was Oh so glad you informed me I would be remembered in your will: "I'm going to include 'Hi! Tony, just to let you know I remembered'" you smiled. Going to miss our next phone call. But I will always remember that there are but two lawyer jokes, as you told me, all the rest are true! Even though I'm far away in the Netherlands we were but a phone call away until now. My heartfelt wishes for your loved ones. Very sad news was just delivered to me today regarding the passing of an incredible late boss! I worked for many years for Mr. Rutledge, along with Betty, and I am truly saddened to hear this news. I often look back to the time spent with him and I often laugh at the coffee breaks we took together or lunch outings, where we would discuss the stock market (or should I say he would talk stocks and bonds) and I would try to follow along, or going out to Headingley for lunch, because that was the only place left he could smoke and play the slots! He had a real zest for life and loved spending time with many of his friends. We talked at great length about his holidays, the Red River Ex and experiences in life. Fred was an awesome boss and I loved my time with him. Fred you will be sadly missed but you will always bring a smile to my face for being so unique! - Posted by: Sue Rehberg-Reid (Ex-employee) on: Apr 09, 2013

We remember Fred as a nice man and an honest lawyer. A rare combination these days. My dear old late father (Lawrence Heppenstall) thought so highly of Fred that he left the remainder of his practice to him back in the early '90's. May they both rest in peace. - Posted by: Doug and Pearl Heppenstall (Clients/Friends) on: Feb 23, 2013

Fred has been a very close friend of our family for over 10 years. He was a joyful, kind and caring person who would go out of his way to assist and provide sound advice to us and anyone who wanted to hear his advice. We became very attached with one another and shared many good laughs over the years. In February 2008 we visited Fred in Peurto Vallarta for a week after phoning my wife Ewa every morning and asking her for us to visit with him and so we did at a spirt of the moment. We had an exceptional good time together and this trip will forever be our hearts. We look back at the picture we had taken with you and feel the joy of having met you Fred and indulged a drink or two together. Fred, we will surely miss you and your phone calls and the chats, but you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace our friend, only time will keep us apart. My former husband, Bob Whitlaw,(now deceased, 1999,) were the luckiest couple to have Fred as our lawyer through all of our real estate transactions throughout the 1980's and the early 90's when we made the transition here to Vancouver Island. I remember his 'laid back' and positive words and once we talked to Fred, then we knew everything would always work out. I am so very sad to know that Fred is no longer here and I want to send sincere love and condolences to his family . Also, love to Betty, who kept everything running without a 'glitch' and was always 'there 'for everyone. sincerely, Alene Whitlaw, former Winnipegger. - Posted by: Alene Whitlaw (former client ) on: Feb 20, 2013

I knew Fred through my late husband: John L. McDonald as they did some real estate business together. From what I remember they were both members of the St. J/A chamber of commerce. Back in the winter of 1980-81 both my husband & I, plus Fred & his then wife Mary Ann were all on vacation together in Mazatlan. It was later that year that my husband died & after his passing I lost contact with Mr. Rutledge. Just this past year I had need of the services of a lawyer & of course Fred came to mind. He was very courteous & efficient at providing legal services although at that time he did not remember me. I am saddened to have read in the Winnipeg Free Press of his passing. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Doreen McDonald (Friend) on: Feb 20, 2013

I met Fred when I came to work for him back in the late 80's after graduating from school. I left to pursue other interests but became reaquainted with him in the last 5 years when my career as a Realtor brought me full circle back to him. Fred was an incredible man to work for back in the day, and one I have been proud to call a friend and colleague these last few years. I will miss our lunches at Ray & Jerry's and hearing all the stories you loved to share. Healing prayers being said for the family. May you rest easy in God's arms Fred. Peace. - Posted by: Sherisse Demkiw-Smith (Friend and Colleague) on: Feb 20, 2013
