DERRALL DWAINE GUNDERSON March 6, 1933 - February 25, 2013 It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we say goodbye to our devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Derrall will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Sheila; his children Bruce (Carmen), Ardis (Bryan), Treva (Marc); special niece Shauna (Mark); his grandchildren Joshua, Caitlin, Benjamin, Maeve, Nathanael, Noah, Kyra, Brynn, and Tayah; his sisters Esther Lewis and Dee Dee Klair; his brother Carl Gunderson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Derrall was born March 6, 1933 in Rainy River, Ontario. He moved to Winnipeg as a teenager to live with his sister Esther to complete his education after his parents died. He began his career with Transport Canada in the Meteorology Department and then he transferred to Air Traffic Control. He started his career as a B-Stand in 1955 and in 1957 became an Air Traffic Controller. He loved his profession and had a very successful 40 year career! He was a quiet and constant presence in our lives, who taught by example and always loved a good joke. After reading the Book of Knowledge at a young age, he was a continuous source of insight, with endless patience for questions. He was the kind of father who actually knew why the sky was blue, how old the universe was, the names of planes, cloud patterns, and stars, and many other interesting facts. He loved history and CBC Radio and was rarely without a book in hand!!! His greatest gift to his family was the time spent during summers at Spruce Lake in Kenora, Ontario, where our family still gathers to this day. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. He loved kids and dogs and was happiest when the house was full of family. After a long struggle with cancer, Derrall passed away quietly at the Grace Hospice, with his loving family at his side. The family would like to thank the staff on the second floor Health Sciences Centre Orthopedic Surgery ward, the staff on the third floor of Riverview Medical Centre, the staff on the sixth floor of the Rehab Hospital, and the staff at the Grace Hospice, for their support over the last year. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2013 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Grace Hospice c/o the Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7; CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 1160 - 75 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or the Canadian Association for Williams Syndrome, P.O. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Gundy was a long time friend and was a truly gentle man. He was a hard worker and was always quick to offer help to others for shift changes. He will be fondly remembered by all his ATC friends. Please accept my deepest condolences. - Posted by: Don Wilson (Long time co-worker and friend.) on: Mar 03, 2013

  • I have had the pleaseure of meeting and working with both Treva and Ardis in Winnipeg many years ago. Both ladies have a great outlook on life and family. After meeting their parents only a few times but hearing many family stories, I can only assume this love of life and family was taught to them by their parents. Being a close family, gathering every summer on the lake Derrall will be greatly missed. May each family member find peace in the loving memory that this man leaves behind. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten. Love and prayers to all the family at this most difficult time. - Posted by: Kim and Rick Legere (Friend of treva and Marc Lavoie (Daughter and Son-In-Law)) on: Mar 03, 2013

  • "Gundy" was first and foremost a "gentleman," and an excellent Air Traffic Controller throughout his career. Always with a smile, he was always ready to help out without being asked. It was my privilege to have known and worked with such a good man. Not to be forgotten! - Posted by: Robert (Bob) Willis (Co-Worker Air Traffic Control Winnipeg Centre) on: Mar 02, 2013

  • Growing up as a good friend of Bruce, I came to know Derrall very well. I can honestly say that Derrall may be the nicest man I ever met. We are extremely sorry to hear of Derrall's passing and are very sorry that we won't be back in Winnipeg in time to attend his celebration of life. Please accept our deepest condolences.
