We are saddened to announce the passing of Marion Martha Dutka (nee Schmigel) wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt on March 3, 2013. Her capacity for loving care of others was always accompanied by joy and laughter. She was born October 23, 1924 in the Ukraine to Onufry and Vera Schmigel. The family immigrated to Canada in 1927. She attended farm schools at White Beach and Porcupine districts. Marion and Walter were married on December 20, 1972 in Winnipeg. A baker and chef by trade, Marion's humanitarian services included work as an LPN in a municipal polio ward and as a volunteer in a Personal Home Care facility for 13 years, befriending many elderly patients. She was a member of North Kildonan United Church. Marion loved animals, poetry, nature, flowers and gardening as well as a healthy laugh with family and friends. The Angels will be well fed with Marion's pickles, perogies and borscht. No one ever left her table hungry. To cherish her memories, Marion leaves behind her loving husband Walter, son Nick (JoAnn) Perrin, grandson Mark Perrin, granddaughter Amber (Chris) David and great- grandson Milo David, sister Anne Assoignon, sister-in-law Betty Schmigel and a number of very loving nieces and nephews. Marion was a Sterling person, taught me how to drive, encouraged me to love the world I was simply a part of in every way. She could share a moment worth more than the words could ever recapture. A pioneer and a modern woman, I could talk to Marion about many things on my mind during my high school days. A Hallmark, I will always be her favorite taxi driver, I remember that 1978 Impala, it was the same as Motor Trends 1977 Motor Trend Car of the Year. Except 1978 was a better year. Such a wealth of knowledge Marion always seemed to have her eye out for me, an Angel of a Neighbour if I ever say. - Posted by: Brett J. Corby (Inspired Pupil) on: Jun 11, 2014

We heard all about Marian and her husband Wally long before we got to meet them. Marian was a good friend and next door neighbour of our cousin Kay and without her constant help and the help of her other neighbours, Clara and Bob Nolan, Kay could not have continued to live in her own home for as long as she did, after being widowed. Then they continued to visit her regularly in the River East Personal Care Home - something which continued until Kay's passing. On our visits to Canada, we witnessed Marian's loving and caring nature first hand, as well as being treated to a taste of her fabled perogies and warm pancakes with maple syrup. Delicious!! Rest in Peace Marian. - Posted by: John and Rosie Searle (Friends from England) on: Mar 23, 2013

To us, Marion was like a precious jewel found among pebbles on the shore. She never failed to call to inquire about our mother Irene. Irene loved to get out to bingo and Marion and Wally would get her there and safely home again. She called even when she was stuggling with her own health concerns. We will always remember her. Please accept sincere heartfelt sympathy. Roy, Anne, Scott & Neil - Posted by: The Copland family (Irene Copland's family) on: Mar 09, 2013

Thank you, Mrs. Dutka, for your example of living life with joy, even amidst suffering. Your selfless and generous service to others was such an inspiration. You always made those around you feel like they were the most important person in the world, stopping everything and giving them your full attention and love...and maybe even a few perogies, cabbage rolls, and some borscht for the road! The memories of your beautiful smile, your cozy hugs, and your fun laughter will always be cherished by those who knew you. May you be rejoicing now in heaven, Mrs. Dutka, tenderly held in the Father's embrace. - Posted by: Chris & Lynn du Quesnay () on: Mar 07, 2013

I met Marion 25 years ago, and we hit it off right away, and she was a great and positive entity in my life. Marion was always there to lend a helping hand in my trials of life and her wisdom was greatly appreciated with the raising of my 6 children. We spent many nights at bingo and I will always remember her excitement when she learned how to use her debit card. I was so happy to be able to assist her with her downsize from a house into her 2 hen 1 bedroom apartment, and believe letting go of things was no easy feat for her. She almost always found a reason why she needed to hang onto that 1 item. Marion brought much happiness to my life and I am so blessed to be able to call her my dearest friend. My life has been enriched by her friendship and I will miss her terribly. Rest peacefully my friend, your journey here is done and watch over my angel, Brianna, who now has you to hold her hand. - Posted by: Shannon Corby (Close friend and neighbour ) on: Mar 07, 2013
