IDA BIRSE (nee NEUMAN) March 4, 1911 - March 5, 2013 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Ida Birse on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the Health Sciences Centre just one day following her 102nd birthday. Ida was predeceased by her parents, Adolph Neuman and Ottilie Selch, her husband David Birse, sisters Mathilde (Tillie) Heimers, Helene, Audrey, Velma, and brothers Raymond, Norman and Harold Neuman. Ida was born in Morden, but moved to Manitou at the age of nine where she attended school and lived until early adulthood. After receiving training at Normal School, she began her career as a teacher at a Hutterite colony at the height of the Depression in the 1930s. She came to understand the Hutterite culture during this time and studied their history and customs. After ten years, Ida left her early career to marry, but continuously maintained contact with her Hutterite students and friends until her final year. Following her marriage to David Birse in 1941, Ida moved to Winnipeg where she took up residence in the West End and where she has since remained. After establishing a life in Winnipeg, she eventually resumed her teaching career as a substitute in the Winnipeg School Division which she only suspended to take care of loved ones. Throughout the 1960s, Ida personally cared for her mother, Ottilie, then in failing health, until her passing in 1969. She would later do the same for her husband, David Birse, until his death in 1982. Religion was central to Ida's life and she has been a member of Bethesda Church throughout her life in Winnipeg. Her other passions were family, cooking and gardening which she pursued until her final days. Ida will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and fiercely independent spirit. Ida will be lovingly remembered by her nephews Eric, Roger, Murray and Michael Neuman, and nieces Josephine (Jan) Neuman and Patricia Joanne Randall-Ball as well as her grandnieces Jamie Rodrigues, Jennifer Zoe Neuman, and Katherine Taylor, grandnephew Christopher Neuman, three great-nephews and one great-niece, as well as many friends. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses and medical staff of Emergency and GB3 at the Health Sciences Centre for the compassion and support that they provided during Ida's last days. A memorial service in memory of Ida's life will be held at Bethesda Church at 1350 Grant Avenue on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON1160, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Ida was my Dad's niece and I remember her well. Ida and her sister always made a point of visiting us whenever we came to Winnipeg and attended all of our family functions. Ida was very outgoing and will be sadly missed. Our condolances to the family. With deepest sympathy, Leon & Ethel (Neuman) Mankow. - Posted by: Ethel (Neuman) Mankow (cousin) on: Mar 12, 2013

  • Mrs. Birse was my Mother's teacher almost most of her school years. All of our family felt we knew her because Mom often spoke of her "Idela" (which was their nickname for her). Although, I was the only one of us who personally met her. I met Mrs. Birse around her 90th birthday when we asked her to write for us a short story to relate her experience of teaching in the colony's multi classroom for a Bon Homme history report. I am willing to share her story if you request it. sdpc@sofelco.ca - Posted by: David Gross (My Mother's teacher) on: Mar 11, 2013

  • Mrs. Birse lived across the street from my family growing up and has lived across the street from my mother for as long as I can remember. I remember Mrs. Birse as being a wonderful lady, good friend to my mother and a very independent person. I know that my mother will miss her very much. Rest in peace and my sympathy and prayers go out to all her family. - Posted by: Heather Verhoef (former neighbour) on: Mar 11, 2013
