He leaves to mourn his wife Mary, of 63 years, children Alf (Dorothy), Anne (Brian), Jim (Kathy), Edith, Natalie (Michael), several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his sister Lillian Hearst, as well as many nieces, nephews and other family. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred Wm. Sr. and Edith (nee Corbett), and brother-in-law Roy Hearst. Al was born in Toronto and lost his parents at the age of 14, he was then cared for by the Smerhy family until the age of 19 when he joined the Royal Canadian Armed Forces where he served for over 26 years. While stationed in Shilo he met the love of his life, Mary Kruger at a restaurant in Brandon. After a short courtship they were married September 2, 1949. Together they raised five children while stationed at many bases across Canada before settling in Winnipeg in 1974. Al enjoyed building models to working on cars with his sons, to remodeling his homes. He was a jack of all trades. Al and Mary enjoyed retirement in Rivers, Manitoba for 17 years before settling again in Winnipeg. The family would like to thank the 3rd floor staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their exceptional care and comfort shown to Al throughout his stay. A private family graveside service will be held at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens on Thursday, March 14, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations in Al's memory may be made to the charity of your choice. We are so sorry to hear the loss of our Mother's only younger brother, Uncle Alfie, as she often lovingly referred to him to all of us. In those early lean years it was always a very special time in our house when both Aunt Mary and Uncle Alf came for a visit. Our Uncle was someone who would always bring a warm and beautiful smile to our Mother's face and you could tell that they shared a very special respect towards each other. We are going to miss you uncle - our memories of you as a family man, as a proud and loving father, as a mentor to many whose lives you have surely touched, and to take the blunt of Mary's jokes at times, you will always be remembered best as our Uncle Alfie - rest in peace, Uncle. - Posted by: Bruce and Nicole Hearst (Nephew) on: Mar 13, 2013
