NORMA DAVIS WAINWRIGHT (nee WALTERS) On March 12, 2013, Norma passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 83. Norma will be lovingly remembered by her son, Allan (Ingrid Pflug); her daughter, Susan Taylor (Hugh); her five grandchildren, Victoria, Hugh Christopher, and Gordon Taylor, and William and Autumn Wainwright; nephew Greg Holmberg (Mary), and niece Carol Forsythe (David). Norma was predeceased by her husband of 44 years - Gordon Bailey Wainwright in 1999, and her sister Doreen Holmberg in 2012. Norma was born on September 29, 1929 in Winnipeg. Her parents, Allan and Ida Walters, raised Doreen and Norma on Anderson Avenue. As a family, they attended St. John's Cathedral. The two young girls worked at the church on Saturdays. Norma spoke fondly of placing the bows on the pews in preparation for weddings. Norma graduated from St. John's High School, and went on to graduate from Teacher's College. Norma started her career at David Livingstone School. On July 23, 1955, Norma and Gordon were married at her beloved St. John's Cathedral. There were bows on the pews. While raising her family in St. Boniface, Norma broke with tradition and started substitute teaching in 1970. She was very well respected by the many principals in the St. Boniface School Division and worked almost daily. Norma and Gordon's one rule, however, was that Mom be home at lunch and after school with her children. Hence, Norma often worked at the same school that Allan and Susan attended -- much to their chagrin! Norma and Gordon had many wonderful friends with whom they enjoyed traveling. They also enjoyed many gatherings with friends and family at Victoria Beach. Norma was a kind and gentle mother and grandmother. She was loved and adored by many people. On March 12, 1960, Norma and Gordon welcomed their first born, Allan, into their arms. On March 12, 1988, Norma and Gordon welcomed Hugh Ross Taylor into the family as he joined Susan in Holy Matrimony at St. John's Cathedral. (There were bows on the pews). On March 12, 2013, Gordon lovingly welcomed Norma back into his arms in the presence of our Lord and their numerous friends. He had been waiting a long time. A memorial service and celebration of Norma's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at St. John's Cathedral, 135 Anderson Avenue. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6; Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 9Z9, or a charity of your choice. Special thanks to the three beautiful angels who cared for Grandma Norma - Chona, Violet, and Lhen - for their compassion, love and kindness. We are sincerely grateful. • Dear Susan and Family, Our sincere sympathy in the loss of your mom, mother-in-law, grandma. The unconditional love she had for all of you was sooooo evident whenever we had the honour of meeting her at one of the school events that both of our children were attending to. I can remember at one event how we were busy with our older daughters and there was Norma running after her young, mischievous, grandson Gordon AND CATCHING HIM before he got into too much trouble. I had alot of respect for her agility and uncanny way of reasoning with that little guy. She gave the best hugs! A wonderful woman that put her wonderful family first always. • Susan, Hugh, Victoria, Hugh Christopher and Gordon, Rob and I are very sorry to hear of your loss. We did not have the pleasure of knowing your mother - she was obviously a loving wife and mother well ahead of her time. I can picture the pews at St John's Cathedral very well - maybe there can be a few bows at your mom's memorial service.
