Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN UNRUH (nee DEFER) June 16, 1931 - March 19, 2013 Peacefully on March 19, 2013, at the Golden Door Nursing Home, Mom passed away with her sister Rita by her side. Helen was born to the blended families of Defer and Martens in Blumenfeld, Manitoba and moved to St. Elizabeth where she lived on the family farm until she attended Practical Nursing School. Helen then married Walter Unruh, moved to Winnipeg and raised two children, Cynthia and Karl. Walter and Helen owned and operated Unruh Builders until they retired. Helen's passion was her home at Lake of the Woods where she lovingly tended her garden throughout her retirement. Helen was a member of First Mennonite Church for over 50 years. Mom loved curling and enjoyed critiquing games on TV with her own unique commentary on how she would have played the game; these commentaries were accompanied with a kind of convoluted dance in her living room in which Helen demonstrated her own unique curling technique. Helen is survived by her daughter Cynthia Johnson, husband Wayne and grandson Justin; her son Karl, wife Svetlana and granddaughters Elisa and Christina; brother Julius Martens (Lillie); sister Rita Fast (Jack); sisters-in-law Mary Lou Martens and Irene Defer; and other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews in the Defer, Martens and Unruh families. Helen was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Walter; parents Mary and Henry Defer; brothers Jack and Henry Martens and Peter Defer. The family would like to thank the staff at the Golden Door for the kindness they showed Helen during her stay there. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., April 2, 2013 at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Ave. Refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider the Mennonite Central Committee or a charity of your choice.

Dear Cindy and Karl - with fond memories we will remember the wonderful times in the Algonquin back yards of your parents and ours. Many good afternoons were spent discussing politics, life in North Kildonan, family and friends and the beautiful gardens. We enjoyed watching your parents share with ours. Such neighborly households! Your parents enjoyed watching our children grow and our lives all evolve over the many years. Our condolences and prayers are with you and your family. Blessings to all.
