HELEN JEAN WILSON Helen was born in Brandon, MB, on December 21, 1930, the only daughter of Alexander and Hilda Guild. She spent her childhood years on the family farm northwest of Brandon, which was settled in 1879. Helen attended Hunter School, a one-room school where her mother had once taught. She later attended Brandon Collegiate. Helen attended the University of Manitoba, enrolling in the Faculty of Home Economics in 1947. She lived in the student residence, Taché Hall, where she met the love of her life, Arthur Wilson, a farmer from Oakville, MB. This began a four-year courtship. Following her graduation, she was married to Arthur in Knox United Church in Brandon on June 23, 1951. They moved to the family farm at Oakville, MB. They added two children to their family, Howard in 1955 and Heather in 1965. Helen loved life on the farm but maintained an interest in her other profession. Arthur pursued further education at the University of Manitoba, and the family spent the winter months in Winnipeg, where she served as a dietician at Victoria and Grace Hospitals. In 1965, her family moved to Saskatoon, where Arthur became a professor at the University of Saskatchewan. Helen became part of the Dietician's Office at University Hospital. Along the way, she obtained her P.H.T. degree (Putting Husband Through) when Arthur received his Ph.D. In 1971 the family returned to Winnipeg, where Helen became a dietician at St. Boniface Hospital. She earned her Canadian Dietetics Association designation at St. Boniface, and received her 20-year pin there just before she retired. Throughout her life Helen was a "Martha", serving quietly in the background. She deeply loved her family and was an inspiration to them. She leaves behind her soul mate of 61 years of marriage, Arthur, son Howard (Vivian) Wilson of Calgary, and daughter Heather (Ron) Karlenzig of Winnipeg. Grandchildren include Cory Kloos of Winnipeg, Alana (Mathieu) Manaigre of Ste. Agathe, Megan Kloos of Winnipeg, Naomi Wilson of Pasadena, California, and Bethany Wilson, of La Mirada, California. Her great-grandchildren are Maia and Lucas Manaigre. Helen was a long-time member of Bethesda Church and latterly attended Faith Bible Church. She was a Corporation member of Providence College and Seminary. Helen was also an active member of the Gideons. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the excellent care Helen received from the nurses and staff of the Sharon Home (Weinberg 3) during the final months of her life. Her funeral will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Providence College (Otterburne MB R0A 1G0) or the Gideons (Bibles by Phone, 1-888-482-4253). Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Helen was truly a lovely person. She was a great contributor to the ministry of KYB Club for many years... a behind the scenes service, but very vital. She did it with efficiency and cheerfulness. We send our condolences to Arthur, Howard and Vivian, Heather and Ron and their families. - Posted by: Jim and Bettie Jacobson (friend) on: Mar 30, 2013
