BENJAMIN EISNER The family of Benjamin Eisner sadly announces his passing on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the Grace Hospital at the age of 90 years. Dad is survived by his loving wife Anne of 69 years; children Ken (Jeannine), Marv (Marg), Ed (Libby) and Dianne (Gerry); grandchildren Shelley (Peter), Kendra, Michael (Christie), Stephen (Tara), Kristen (Jamie), Kim (Jeff), Jennifer (Jeff), Travis (Melanie) and Taylor and 15 great-grandchildren. Dad was predeceased by his parents Adolf and Alwina, his brothers Ewald (Mary), Arnold (Olga), Charles (Tracy), William (Grace) and Harold (Leona), and his sisters Adeline (Arvid Brust), Olga (Ed Wesner) and Martha (Joe Lepholtz). Dad's family came to Canada in 1927, and settled in Minitonas, MB, where his father purchased farmland. Growing up during the Depression, life was a struggle, and the whole family learned the value of hard work, something Dad never forgot. In 1943, Dad met Mom at a church picnic, and they married in November of that year. Dad purchased farmland near Birch River, but soon discovered farming was not for him. Dad ran a small electrical repair business and also spent some time working on the DEW line, while studying by correspondence for his journeyman's papers as an electrician. He got a job as a Lineman with National Defence, and the famity moved to Winnipeg in 1957. Dad continued to work hard to provide the best for his family, often working evenings and weekends wiring basements, cabins and garages. Dad also curled recreationally for many years, a passion he passed on to all of his children. After a successful 30 year career at National Defence Dad retired in 1987, and he and Mom enjoyed many years of retirement. They loved to travel going once to Europe and frequently to Hawaii. They also travelled to Ottawa often to visit Marv and his family. They lived in Kelowna for several years, and spent a great deal of time travelling around the lower mainland and interior of BC. In Kelowna, Dad took up gardening, and his roses were the envy of all his neighbours. But Mom and Dad found they missed the family a lot, and in 1993, they moved back to Winnipeg. Dad was a strong man who never gave in. In 2001 Dad had a serious heart attack, but he survived it and had the gift of another dozen years of relatively healthy, independent living. In the last few months, Dad's strength finally left him and his health began to fail. But he continued to enjoy visiting with family members until the very end. The family would like to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa who took care of him during the past 15 months, and at Grace ER and 3 South for their care and compassion in his last few days. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the charity of your choice. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dad's life will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Our sincere condolences to your family. I have good memories of Uncle Ben going back many years. Love and blessings to all of you. - Posted by: Joe and Rose Burghardt (niece) on: Apr 08, 2013

  • Ben - you were quite a guy, - always there to bail me out when my attempts at "do-it-yourself" hit the rails. Your sense of humour and sly grin will be missed. My sincere sympathies to Anne, Dianne, Ken, Marv and Ed on the loss of a husband and father. Alex - Posted by: Alex Milton ((former son-in-law)) on: Apr 08, 2013

  • Our family (my parents Willie & Grace Eisner) always loved visiting with uncle Ben & auntie Anne whenever we were in Manitoba or they were Vancouver. So sorry to hear of his passing. Our condolences to the family. - Posted by: Nancy (Eisner) Bush (Niece) on: Apr 07, 2013

  • I so fondly remember visiting your family in Winnipeg and the warm welcome your parents often gave me. I had a chance to visit the part of Poland/Ukraine that our grandparents came from and thought of the heritage of faith we were given from them. May that faith sustain you. - Posted by: Darlene Eisner (niece) on: Apr 06, 2013
