Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNICK SLYWKA June 20, 1944 - April 2, 2013 Suddenly, but peacefully with his family by his side, Nick Slywka passed away at Concordia Hospital on April 2, 2013, at the age of 68. He will be forever missed by his loving wife of 46 years Maureen, and daughters Brenda (David) Tolpa and Lynne (Lauren) Sabeski, grandchildren Janessa and Felicia Tolpa, Alyssa and Blake Sabeski. He is also survived by his brother Walter and sister Christine Chomicki. Nick was born in Rosthern, SK, and grew up in Edmonton, AB. He began his career with Veteran's Affairs where he met and married Maureen Miller. Later he transferred to Revenue Canada Taxation, and in 1979, moved his family to Winnipeg. He continued to work at the Winnipeg Taxation Centre until his retirement in 1999. His love of sports developed at an early age but he especially had a passion for football and hockey. He was an amateur hockey referee for 27 years in both Edmonton and Winnipeg. He was chosen to referee in Czechoslovakia for the University Games, which was the highlight of his career. He was also a softball umpire in Edmonton for 10 years. The family would like to thank Drs. Komenda, Shojania and Peschken for all the years of great care. We would also like to thank the wonderful staff on N3 West at Concordia Hospital, especially Joelle and Laurie, for their care and compassion during his last days. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Nick's life will be held on Monday, April 8, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. "You never know when a goodbye is the last goodbye." Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111
