GLEN CHARLES RYAN
Date of Passing: Apr 07, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGLEN CHARLES RYAN August 1, 1929 - April 7, 2013 Peacefully with loved ones at his side, it is with intense sadness that family members announce the passing of their father, husband, grandpa, brother and uncle on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 83 years young. Left to cherish his beautiful memory are his wife Helen; children Pat (Maureen), Jeff (Wendy), Debby (Hobbs), Ken Lambertsen, Laurie Bouchard (Bob), Cathy McConnell (Brian), Donna Burghardt (Jim); precious grandchildren Lynsay (Ray), Maddox, Derek, Braeley, Noah, Meghan, Hailey, J.T., Marlee (Wood), Callie, Ryan, Terence (Shae), Jace, Neil, Mason, Amanda, and Emily. Glen will also be missed by brother John (Vancouver), sisters Janette (Walter) (San Francisco), and Nettie (Victoria). Glen was predeceased by his first wife, Joan (McLaughlin) in 1993, parents John and Edith, and brother Jay. What can we say about the man named Glen Ryan? Anyone meeting Glen liked him. He was an honourable man and his love of life and his sense of humour were legendary. He loved his children. He raised them with honesty, simplicity and loving encouragement. He was thrilled with their successes....whether it be academic, athletic or personal. And, equally supportive during difficult times. He introduced his sons, Pat and Jeff, to the sport of curling and celebrated their numerous victories in both The Brier and the World stage. Cottage life was an important focus for the family. We are left with many, many wonderful and fun memories of summers at Victoria Beach. Glen was born in Boissevain, MB and raised in Ninga. As a young man he moved to Winnipeg with his wife, Joan, to attend university and start a family. His business career was spent as Secretary-Treasurer at Cowin Steel Co., retiring in 1992. Glen enjoyed sports, from pitching baseball with the Elmwood Giants, golfing with friends and curling at Assiniboine Curling Club. He was past president and builder of the curling club and also a long time member of the St. James Optimist Club. He coached baseball and hockey with his sons when they were young. A natural musician, he could simply pick up any instrument and play by ear. There were many late nights spent at the curling club with Glen playing piano and everyone singing and dancing. A sincere thank you to the nurses and doctors in ICU at Grace Hospital. Your thoughtfulness and compassion helped our family immensely. Dad, you will always be remembered with loving thankfulness. Our world is a little dimmer now that you are not in it. Cremation has taken place. A family celebration of his life will be held at Victoria Beach on a beautiful Father's Day weekend in June. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Mr. Ryan hired me right out of College. He picked me up from Success business college one afternoon and told me stories about his family along the way. I grew attached to this kind, gentle, proud man instantly. He hired me that day, and I spent the next 7 years working along side him. Within my first year there I was introduced to curling & curled on the Cowin team at the Civic Cal. I feel in love with the sport right away. I had the pleasure to curl against his grandchildren this past April at the Thistle's 125th bonspiel & what a joy they were. Time holds onto everlasting memories, Mr. Ryan's smile & laughter will forever be in mine. My deepest sympathies to all of the family. - Posted by: Sylvia Stecy (Employee @ Cowin Steel) on: May 06, 2013

Pat and Jeff: You have lost your # 1 booster. We have so many great memories involving your dad and curling. His outgoing manner and litany of jokes made us feel “at home” in his presence. You knew, if Glen was around, that things would not be dull. We consider ourselves fortunate to have known Glen and been involved with the Ryan family. Please accept our condolences. My condolences to Glen's family and everyone who was touched by his character and personality. I first met 'Mr. Ryan' in 1971. I can remember that moment like it was yesterday. It's funny how some memories never fade. I guess it's because he was such a positive human being. I will not forget the man. - Posted by: Gary Nagamori (friend) on: Apr 17, 2013

Helen, Debbie, Pat & Jeff We were so sad to hear of our dear friend's passing. We both have so many fond memories of Glen. He had a heart of gold and a humor that was so welcome in the tension of a Brier of a World curling championship. Glen kept me company many times as I paced a curling arena....he would always say come on Corrine let's go for a walk I need a smoke! Helen and Glen opened up their home to us when Don went to Winnipeg for work. A gesture we will never forget! We will miss you dear friend. I am sure you will keep them smiling in heaven! For six years Glen and I worked under the same roof at Cowin Steel. Glen was a real encyclopedia of jokes (practical, too) and anecdotes which really made my day, and which I have been successfully recycling for the past 50 years, always remembering him. May he rest in peace with joy in his heart. My deepest sympathy to his numerous family. Basil. - Posted by: Basil M. Rotoff (Friend & former colleague) on: Apr 15, 2013

I remember Glen & Joan from the days on Truro St and my first impression of Glen was something like, "what just happened there" As time went on I came to understand Glen's sense of humour and developed a great respect for his conversation because although we were kids, he would always talk to us like we were adults. Being in the Ryan household was very welcoming like being at home and as we matured Glen's great wit and aspiring point of view continued. Years later whenever we would cross paths it was still the same contagious smile and hardy hello. Glen was always interested to hear how I was doing and what I was doing followed by more insight and wit. A great man, a great life and great memories I won't forget. Glen has left the building and taken his unique personality on the road, not gone, but entertaining a new crowd. Helen, Debbie, Pat, Jeff we are better for knowing Glen Ryan the Husband and Dad. - Posted by: David Iverson (Friend) on: Apr 14, 2013
