ELFRIEDE SOFIE EMMA SCHARIKOW January 3, 1918 - April 11, 2013 Elfriede passed away on April 11, 2013 at the Maples Personal Care Home at the age of 95 years. Elfriede was predeceased by her husband, Eugene, parents Otto and Emma Weislein, and son-in-law Carlo Peduto. She is survived by her daughter, Ursula; sons Michael and Eugene (Bev); grandchildren Kristin (Darryl), Carlos, Michael Jr. (Jolene), Karen (Christopher), and Leanne; great-grandchildren, Meghan, Emily, Katie, Daniel, Amy, Mortiz and Carlotta. Mom had a long and sometimes challenging life. She was born in Hollabrunn, Austria, the only child of Otto and Emma where she enjoyed a wonderful young life. She, along with her two life-long friends, Margit and Francie had the unusual privilege of those times of obtaining a university degree, being the only three women in their class. Then the war came and life changed dramatically. In 1952, Mom, Michael and Gene came to Canada to join Eugene Sr. in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. They lived there until 1962 when Mom, Mike and Gene moved to Winnipeg. Mom worked in the insurance business, first with Peter Warkentin and then with Henry Schmidt, until her retirement. Mom had numerous, varied interests and hobbies throughout her life. She especially loved to read, listen to music and followed a variety of sports, especially hockey and football. For many years she attended the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concerts with her good friends, Harry and Irma Wright. She also spent many years volunteering for Age and Opportunity where she developed some dear friendships. Unfortunately, in her later years she developed macular degeneration and was no longer able to read or watch her favourite sports on TV. However, she adapted by listening to "talking" books provided through CNIB, spent many, many hours listening to the radio in the company of her much loved dog, Hexi, and although blind, knit dozens of woolen scarves, which she donated. She continued to live independently in her own home until her late 80s when she moved to Catherine Place and then three years ago to Maples Personal Care Home. Our family would like to express our deepest appreciation to the staff at the Maples Personal Care Home for their kind and compassionate care. Cremation has taken place and at Oma's request there will not be a funeral. Flowers are gratefully declined, but if anyone wishes, donations can be made to the CNIB, 1080 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3G 3M3. Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111
