ALEXANDER WILFRED TAYLOR Peacefully on Monday, April 15, 2013 at the age of 97 years, Alec passed away at Riverview Health Centre after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. Proud and loving father (Pop), grandfather (Gramps) and great-grandfather (G-Pa), Alec will be deeply missed by sons, Barry and Gary (Irene); grandchildren, Sandi (Rob), Nikki (David) and Jason (Helen); Tim and great-grandchildren, Devon, Cameron, Jaron and Brooklynn; as well by his "special daughters" Barb (Gary) and Jan (Dale); extended family; friends; especially Ted, Dave and Cathy, Peter, Nancy; and many neighbours who were all friends to "Mr. Taylor". He was predeceased by his devoted wife Mick (Louise) in 2005. Growing up on a farm in the Lily Bay Area, Alec was one of nine children born to Scottish immigrants James and Agnes, where he learned the value of taking pride in hard work. He, along with two of his brothers and close friends, joined the armed forces and served overseas in the Second World War. Fortunately, Alec returned (as many of his friends did not) to Winnipeg where he lived and worked a number of jobs including chimney sweep, painter and oil burner service mechanic. A true "Jack of all trades", he had talents that many friends and family were beneficiaries of. One might even include dog trainer among his career repertoire as he taught his "friend" Bailey to fetch his slippers, count and "speak low". Alec loved animals, especially dogs, and all the neighbourhood dogs loved him as he never left the house without a cookie in his pocket. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, going for walks, planting his gardens and tending to his roses. He loved to tell stories, many of which included invaluable wisdom and personal life lessons. Taking great pleasure in looking after his family, Alec will forever be remembered as a generous man who always helped others. Active, vibrant with an abundance of energy and strength, both physically and mentally, he enjoyed independence and good health for almost all of his 97½ years. A truly remarkable man, his sense of humor, kindness and courage were evident to all right up until the end when he said it was time to go. These qualities made Alec endearing to everyone he met. People were drawn to him and we all feel blessed to have had him in our lives. As per Alec's wishes, no formal service will be held. The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre, WRHA Palliative Care and CancerCare Manitoba for your kindness and compassion. Also a special Thank You and much appreciation to friends Ted, Dave and Cathy for all your help, you're "Tops!" In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alec's memory to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of one's choice. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • This was a man with a heart as big as the world. He never let anything bother him, he always told me if it bothers you don't do it. He was right. He lived the longest in his family only because he cared the most. Very very missed by me and my family. Good bye old friend - Posted by: ted hodnett (his buddy) on: Apr 28, 2013

  • Mr Taylor was our "back lane neighbour" for the past 9 years. I have never met a more caring kind individual. He was always wanting to help anyone and had knowledge of so many trades. He would always return our recycle bins to our yard and you would always see him puttering in the lane. Picking weeds or cleaning the lane of any loitered trash. I feel honoured to have known him, this world needs more people like him. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Shannon Kroeker (Neighbour) on: Apr 22, 2013

  • My dear friend, Mr. Taylor.....or as he would name himself if he called and left a message on my phone "ole man Taylor here"....you are a one of a kind that this world will never see the likes of again. You always had a helpful hand to offer, tools to share, and an abundance of wisdom that I will not find anywhere else. I've always appreciated your generosity, and will never forget that you always told me you'd already lived a good, full, and satisfying life. The only regret is having to miss you here on earth, but I am glad when I think that I'll see you and your smiling face Heaven side someday. God Bless you, Mr. Taylor! - Posted by: Barb Burke (Friend/neighbour) on: Apr 21, 2013

  • There was not a better man than Mr. Taylor, his love of life and people was always obvious. My dog, Starr, will miss all his treats as will all the dogs that received them while Mr. Taylor was on his many numerous walks. I can't even put into words how much he will be missed from everyone on Belmont Avenue..."We will meet again Mr. Taylor - until then I will think of you often" - Posted by: Connie Weber (Neighbor and Friend) on: Apr 19, 2013

  • Alex was a wonderful neighbour who was always willing to help neighbours with repairs around their homes. Alex taught and helped my husband to do the stuccoing on our house. He was a man of many talents and stories to tell of his life experiences. He was always willing to help anyone who needed it. He will be dearly missed. - Posted by: Margaret King (Neighbour) on: Apr 18, 2013
