JOSEPH (JOE) MARKS It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, Joe Marks on Monday, April 15, 2013, at the age of 87 years, in his own "Home that Joe Built". Left to cherish Joe's memory are his daughters Linda and Joan (Bob and grand-dog Bucky); sisters Sophie and Anna; sister-in-law Liz; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, of whom he was so proud and loved dearly, he leaves behind many friends who will cherish their happy and fun loving memories of him always. He was predeceased by his Dad Nick; Mom "Baba"; and brothers, Ed and Victor. Joe was able to build, repair, wire or plumb just about anything and he was always happy to help anyone in need. He built his own home from the bottom up and was proud to say that he could tell you where every nail was and that he had hammered each one in himself. From childhood and throughout life, Joe was involved in swimming, baseball, hockey, curling, golf and handball, and excelled at all of them. He worked at the C.N.R. then moved to CBC Winnipeg until his retirement in 1985 and has since enjoyed visiting with his CBC friends at the twice yearly pensioner's luncheons. He was a member of the IATSE union and worked for years as a lighting man for many of Winnipeg's big theatre productions and concerts. Joe was a great organizer and planned and hosted many retirement parties, union dinners and dances. He started the CBC Curling League which ran for many years. Joe would take orders for a variety of fresh meats, eggs, cheeses and turkeys for all at CBC to buy and enjoy and it was nothing but the best when he ordered the food. Joe was an avid gardener and an excellent cook. He loved canning, preserving, making jams and jellies and sharing them with family and friends. Joe had a warm smile, a big heart and loved to tease and give big hugs. He brought joy into the lives of everyone he met with his great sense of humour and his ability to listen, just sit and chat, or tell a good joke. He loved to travel especially to Flin Flon with his best friend Brenda, where he felt that he was at home with the many friends he made there. Linda and Joan would like to invite family and friends to celebrate Joe's wonderful life on Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ...in The Home that Joe Built. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Manitoba Lung Association or the Winnipeg Humane Society would be very much appreciated. • Where to start.....Uncle Joe was so kind and welcoming...I remember family gatherings where he and my dad Art would be laughing and joking.....I spent many sleepovers at their home with cousins Linda and Joan plus all the special memories at Falcon Lake.....Uncle Joe you'll be missed but will always remain in my heart. - Posted by: Carol Smith (Niece) on: Apr 18, 2013

  • A wedding was not a wedding if you didn't get up to polka with Uncle Joe, he taught many of us younger ones how to polka. What a great picture of him. - Posted by: Tannis Burgess (Niece) on: Apr 18, 2013

  • My husband, Jim, and I have known and had great times with Joe over many years. He was one of a kind and a great person to be around......so full of fun and mischief and always cheerful, even in his later years as his health began to deteriorate. I'm proud to have known him and will miss seeing him at the semi-annual CBC luncheons. - Posted by: Doreen Bullen (Friend) on: Apr 18, 2013

  • I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. The notice says it all. A great guy to work with and be around. I sometimes called him Ernie due to what I thought was his resemblance to the famous actor Ernest Borgnine. I don't think he thought so but we both had a laugh over it now and again. Take some comfort in the knowledge that he had such a positive effect on so many outside his immediate family - Posted by: Murray Parker (colleague) on: Apr 18, 2013
