DOUGLAS JOHN GLAYS
Date of Passing: Apr 13, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS JOHN GLAYS March 18, 1948 - April 13, 2013 It is with extreme shock and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Doug, husband to Barb, father to Karen (Paul), Brenda (John) and best pal to his dog "Jack". He is predeceased by his parents, Garnet and Irene, brothers Teddy, Gary and Bruce. He is survived by his sister Gail, brothers Don, Brian, Mark, Ross, Randy, Glen and Dennis. Doug was a quiet man with a great sense of humour and quick wit. He loved his family unconditionally and worked tirelessly to support them. We were so grateful to have been able to celebrate his 65th birthday just a month ago. He was so looking forward to retirement this September and that is all he talked about the last six months. We are so sad that he never reached that goal. Doug started working at the age of 14 with his dad in the silk screening business. He loved producing billboards and became extremely proficient in the skill very quickly. He was surprised and happy to have one erected for him in 1994 on St. Mary's Road for his and Barb's 25th Wedding Anniversary. He continued in the field until 1996 when Mediacom closed. Doug was left with looking for a new career and at the age of 52 he decided to take up long distance driving. He worked for Reimer Express Lines until his passing. In his earlier years, Doug enjoyed hunting, fishing and he was also an accomplished 5 pin bowler. He won the Sam Wasson Title, managed to get on Bowling For Dollars on television and he received a Master Angler Award for his prized sauger he caught on the Winnipeg River. He also received his 1 million miles of safe driving and his jacket that he was so proud of in 2008. His music interests included Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney and he loved listening to Rita MacNeil. In his later years his wife managed to get him updated with her likes which were El Divo and Lady Gaga. Our family would like to thank the Emergency Responders in Edmonton, the staff at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and most of all his driving partner Al Miller, who worked tirelessly to save him. Al, you are our hero. Doug loved working with you and you will forever be a part of our lives. A big thank you to all our family and friends, to everyone at Reimer including the dispatchers - especially Diane, who have supported us at this difficult time. The phone calls, cards, flowers and food is so appreciated. As well, to my "favourite" and only brother Bernie who I love unconditionally and who has helped me tremendously at this time, I thank you. Your wealth of knowledge is mind-blowing. Flowers are gratefully declined and donations, if you wish, can go to Doug's favourite charity, The Winnipeg Humane Society. According to his wishes, there will be no funeral. The family is planning to have a private service in the future. "We love you Dougie and will miss you forever."

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

Barb, Karen, & Brenda - we were so very sad to hear of Doug's passing. I have many wonderful memories of our families times together; time spent in the pool, nights playing cards, summers at the water slides, your trip to Calgary and our visit to the zoo, playing bingo, and on it goes. What I remember most is us laughing; Doug's sharp wit that was most keenly appreciated by Chuck (aka "Chopper"), who often was literally rolling on the floor. Our thoughts and prayers are with you today and in the future as you journey toward the time when your memories will move you beyond tears to laughter and joy.
