Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGERMAIN (GERRY) CHAMPAGNE 1924 - 2013 Peacefully, with family by his side, Germain Champagne passed away at Victoria General Hospital, on April 23, 2013, at the age of 89. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Jeannine (Lavoie), his children Andrée (René Beaudry), Robert (Suzanne Bohémier), Lise (Jean-Pierre Privé) and Francine, his 10 grandchildren Michèle (Erik Thorlakson), Rémi (Jordana Bartinger), Nicole (Jon Knauf), Joël (Sylvie Goguen), Riel, Dominique, Stéphanie (Nick Nault), Colin (Rebecca McQuade), Zoé and Emilie, and his five great-grandchildren Olivier, Chloé, Yannick, Téo and Luka. Germain will also be remembered by sisters-in-law Janette Champagne and Alyette Turenne, brothers-in-law René Lavoie and Michel Lavoie (Patricia Barter), nieces, nephews and friends. Germain was born in Ste-Anne-des-Chênes, Manitoba, on March 23, 1924, son of Charles-Auguste Champagne and Ernestine Tougas. The loss of his dear mother when he was five years old had a profound effect on him. He was the last surviving member of the Champagne family, predeceased by brothers Louis, Emile, Bernard, Gilles, Laurent and Jacques, and sisters Cécilia, Georgine and Noëlla. He was also predeceased by his stepmother Martha (Boily). A sense of adventure no doubt prompted Germain to join the Canadian Army during the Second World War, from November 1943 to August 1946. Proud to serve his country, he travelled across Canada, to England, Scotland and Ireland. Germain met Jeannine, the love of his life, while working at CKSB, one of his first places of employment. Germain greatly enjoyed interacting with people. During his 33 year career with La Procure I.B.A., he had the opportunity to deal with countless clients and suppliers, and nurture friendly ties with many of them. To his great joy, he worked alongside Jeannine at I.B.A. for 20 years. Family was very important to Germain. He was a loving husband and wonderful father, always ready to lend an ear or a helping hand. He was an amazing handyman and Mr. Fix-it, undaunted by complex or mundane projects. He always found time to take his children to the beach, camping, swimming, skating and tobogganing, as well as to extra-curricular activities. Germain was a man of great faith, who taught us by example about respect, integrity, honesty, loyalty and service to others. Although within the last few years he suffered from the effects of Alzheimer's, he will forever be remembered as a kind and gentle soul. We would like to thank all health care staff and caregivers who provided care to Germain. Special thanks to everyone at Victoria General Hospital for their dedication and devotion. Many thanks to Father Roland Lanoie for his kind words and authenticity towards him. The funeral mass will be held at St. Eugène Church, 1007 St. Mary's Road, on Tuesday, April 30 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9. - Posted by: Yvette Fluet Gagnon et famille (Ancienne voisine) on: Apr 30, 2013
