WALTER JAMES COBB August 16, 1923 - April 25, 2013 Walter passed away peacefully in his home, just shy of his 90th birthday. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Ellenor; his brothers Alf, Sam, George and Art; his nephew Dave, and his first grandson, Michael. Grieving his loss are his two sons James Cobb (Bonnie) and Donald Cobb (Kathy), his two daughters Barbara Pomroy (Len) and Louise Brooks (Brent), his only remaining sibling, his sister Ethel Trouten (Tom), and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Walter was born in Eriksdale, Manitoba. He grew up on Alexander Avenue in the Weston area of Winnipeg. He served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a wireless operator in a Halifax Bomber. After the war, he held a couple of temporary jobs before settling into a lifetime career with Canada Post where he was a letter carrier until his retirement after 28 years. He and his Scottish war bride Ellenor raised their four children on Mountain Avenue in the north end of Winnipeg where they developed a tight knit group of friends and neighbours. They both enjoyed bowling with the mixed Letter Carriers Bowling League at Rossmere Lanes. Walter served as the Secretary for that bowling league for many years keeping record of the weekly scores. Walter had a very good bowling average, and one night he caused quite a commotion with all eyes on him as he took top honours by bowling a Perfect Game. After retirement (and once the last child left the nest), Walter and Ellenor started to escape the Canadian winters down south in Apache Junction, Arizona where they purchased a small mobile home. This yearly snow bird migration went on for many years until Ellenor's health made it impossible to continue. They downsized from their house in the North End to a mobile home in South Glen Trailer Park in St. Vital. After Ellenor's passing in 2005, Walter took on all of the domestic duties of owning a home and cooking for himself surprisingly well. Baking raisin buns was one of his signature accomplishments. He deeply missed Ellenor's love and companionship. Walt eventually moved to his own sunny apartment in the Concordia Village. Baseball season is well underway and Walter enjoyed watching his favourite baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays. He was also an avid follower of the "Jones" team in the women's curling. Above all, in his later years, he was drawn to the lights, the sounds, and the thrill of the gamble and company of his regular buddies at the Regent Avenue Casino... "the club" as he referred to it. Cremation has already taken place. In keeping with Walter's wishes, a small graveside gathering for friends and family will be held at the Columbarium in Brookside Cemetery, on Friday, May 10 at 2:00 p.m. Service will conclude at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in his honour to the Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1P6 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Nancy and I were saddened to hear of Dad's passing. We always looked forward to seeing Walter at the "Club". He loved his MacDonald's coffee and lunch. He was a fine gentleman. We will miss him and will always think of him when at the "Club". - Posted by: Doris Arnason ("Club" friends) on: May 08, 2013

  • My husband Peter and I lived across the street from the Cobbs on Sunburst Cresc. in the St Vital Trailer Park for 7 years. They were great neighbours...we had lots of chats, coffee times etc. We also shared a love of winter trips to Arizona. I recall Walter setting out for his daily walks around the Park..he was always so straight backed and determined looking. Condolences to the family...no regrets for a life well lived. - Posted by: Pat VanderGraaf (former neighbour) on: May 05, 2013
