ALLAN JOHNSON It is with the deepest of love and with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather on April 25th, 2013. Al was born January 14th, 1944, the only child of Hjalmar and Florence Johnson. He spent many happy years growing up with his cousins Don, Ralph, and Ray Cook, and good friends Marvin Seaquist and Finlay Brown. He is survived by his beloved wife Gloria, children Sterling, Janelle (Joel Bohemier), Matthew (Shauna), and beloved grandchildren Melina, Max and baby Annelie. Al retired from the City of Winnipeg in 1995, after 32 years of service. Family was of the utmost importance to him, and he devoted many years coaching his children and others in soccer and hockey. Al dedicated many decades of his life to numerous associations (Melrose Community Club, Kilcona Soccer Club, Manitoba Soccer Association). Big Al' you taught us well. Live life with no regrets. We miss and love you! The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Riverview Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Soccer Association, located at 211 Chancellor Matheson Rd. • It was always a pleasure to show up to referee a game and see Al as the coach on the sidelines. I knew the game sheet was done, he would take the flag and there would be no drama. I will miss seeing Al on the pitch. My sincere condolences to the Johnson family. - Posted by: Lisa Sansregret (soccer acquaintance ) on: May 02, 2013

  • To my dear friend, Gloria. We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Al. • The years Big Al was my soccer coach are some of my most teasured times. I know I wasn't always the easiest teen to deal with but Mr. Johnson always had such patience and love, it was hard not to try harder and be a better player/person for him. Thank you Gloria, Janelle, Sterling and Matt for sharing him with the team, I know we took up a lot of his time but we sure appreciated and loved him!! I wish I could be there tomorrow to say good bye please know I will be thinking of you all. XO - Posted by: Nicole Gagnon Schieppati (Kilcona & Brunswick Sting Soccer Player) on: Apr 29, 2013

  • Two of my fondest memories of Al would be his 50th birthday party. What can I say? He started the party really, really early and and a good time was had by all. The other was him calling Gloria and I, " walking babas". Dear Gloria, my heart goes out to you, my friend. Sterling, Janelle and Matt; your dad was so proud of you, and I can actually hear him say, "live life with no regrets". May his love and memory live in your hearts forever. - Posted by: Cassie Rogoski (Friend and former neighbour) on: Apr 28, 2013

  • I too was incredibly lucky to have had Big Al in my life. There is no way that it could have been easy to handle 20 teens, young women and eventually adults at one time but somehow he was able to do it with grace, authority and of course a little bit of humor. The time that we spent as a team on and off the pitch are amongst my most treasured memories. He cared about us and saw us through championships, losses, graduations, breakups, marriages and of course shared in our joy when we became parents ourselves. He truly was amazing, selfless and inspiring and I thank you, Gloria, Janelle, Sterling and Matt for sharing him with us. - Posted by: Michelle Carman (Kilcona and Brunswick Sting Player) on: Apr 27, 2013

  • I was lucky to be blessed with Mr. J (Big Al) in my life for approximately 18 years as he was my soccer coach for both Kil-cona and later on for Brunswick Sting. He truly helped shaped me into the woman I am today and instilled values in me that I carry on today. On behalf of all the ladies that played on those teams.. we just want to express our condolences to Gloria, Sterling, Jenell and Matt... our thoughts and prayers are with you. - Posted by: Kelly Copp (Kilcona & Brunswick Sting Soccer Player) on: Apr 27, 2013
