TAKEO KAWATA Peacefully on May 3, 2013 Takeo Kawata passed away at home at the age of 107 years. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 78 years Shizuko; his daughters Kiyoko, Masako, and Yoshimi; his son Kazuo (Marjorie); his grandchildren Carey, Jeffrey, Trent, Jerry (Alice), and Kathryn; and great-granddaughter Kaylie. Takeo was born on November 4, 1905 in Honolulu, Hawaii, but at a very young age his family moved back to Japan. He immigrated to Canada in 1929 and married Shizuko in 1943 which they then settled in Delta, BC. In 1942 his family moved to Southern Manitoba to a sugar beet farm. From there they moved to Morris, then Middlechurch, and finally to Winnipeg in 1947. Takeo loved to garden, play cards, and watch hockey and football, especially after his retirement in 1970. Takeo was a pioneer member of the Manitoba Japanese United Church at Knox United. Thanks to Rev. and Mrs. Y. Masaki for their many home visits during the latter years of his life. Also thanks to Dr. Y. Hameed. A private service of family and friends will be held on May 8, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, 180 McPhillips Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 2J9, or a charity of your choice.
