JOHN ALFRED CARLSTROM April 25, 1931 - May 22, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected, but peaceful passing of our Dad, grandfather, and friend. Dad will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his daughters, Barb, Leslie, Corinne, and Patti (Dan); his grandchildren Adam, Colin (Rebecca), Masataka, Jordan, Rachel and Matthew. He will also be fondly remembered by his former wife, Ollie, and extended family, Mary and Orest. Dad started his career with the Associated Hospitals of Manitoba from 1955 until 1963. He then began employment with the Manitoba Health Services Commission from 1963 until his retirement in 1991 as a Senior Finance Officer of the Rural Health Care Facilities Division, and from where he made many life-long friends. His love of reading could be seen in his vast collection of books he acquired throughout his lifetime which were extremely important to him. Dad would like to challenge people with their understanding of the English language. He believed that life should be a never-ending quest for knowledge and that one should always remain curious. So through conversation, he always chose his words carefully to express his thoughts. His vocabulary was never-ending, and his memory for dates of important events in his life, was incessant. In his retirement years, Dad took to essay writing. This was his outlet to express all his thoughts regarding life, the world, politics and healthcare. He liked nothing more than a good discussion to fire him up, but he always took the time to be a good listener. For many who knew Dad, his sense of humour came out whenever possible. He believed wisdom brought forth both self-confidence and usually an abundance of humour and laughter. His quick wit provided our family and many of his friends with countless enjoyment; always one to provide a joke or make one laugh even at the expense of himself. He had to be a good sport in our family. Although, over the last few years, Dad had many health challenges, he forged forward the best he could with a smile on his face and a joke in his back pocket. "Big John", as he was known, was one of a kind. Dad left this world as he would have wanted: with his wits, independence and dignity. In his own words, "I Did It My Way.". On behalf of our Dad, never stop yearning for the love of learning and "Make sure brain is engaged before putting tongue in motion.". We love you Dad and will miss you so dearly. A celebration of Dad's life will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, west of Red River College. • A wonderfully written obituary. The picture shows the warmth and sense of humor and the eloquent words and well written tribute show how the importance of word, education and love were passed on to his daughters.
