ELIZABETH LUCILLE JOHNSTON March 25, 1930- May 20, 2013 Peacefully on May 20, Elizabeth (Betty) passed away at the Charleswood Care Centre. She is survived by her only child Cynthia and husband Court Solimka. Betty was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) Johnston in 1988. Mom grew up in the North End making many lifelong friendships. She had a classically trained coloratura soprano voice, winning scholarships to study in Europe. Betty chose to marry Bill instead! They moved to St. Vital living on Moore Avenue for 52 years. Mom had a great sarcastic sense of humour, a quick wit and never turned down an invitation to party. Sadly mom became a recluse after Dad died in 1988. Her advancing Geriatric Dementia forced her to move to the Charleswood Care Centre in January 2013. She said she should have moved there years ago! The care, tenderness and compassion of the staff was truly outstanding. In her final days, her nurse Dena and aid Abeba were amazing. Her funeral service will be Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Voyage Funeral Home, 1073 St. Mary's Road (Evangel Chapel) 204-284-7500. Father Michael Wollbaum officiating.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Betty was first a customer of hermie's beauty parlour along Dell and we all became friend. Three women who had three daughters. We were all different ages but we had great nights out. So much laughter restaurants knew to give us private rooms or back corner tables. We miss both Del and Betty. Our sympathies to Cynthia. Betty shared a lot of good times with us. - Posted by: Marlies nix and hermie steinbrecher (Friends) on: Aug 07, 2017

  • Betty and Bill were like family to me. We lived "around the corner" from them. I have fond memories of walking over to visit in the evenings as well as visiting them at their cottage in Winnipeg Beach. Bill was the "strong and silent one", with few words spoken, and Betty made up the difference. I fondly enjoyed her sense of humour and quick wit. Even my mom (Grace Nedokis), couldn't out talk Betty! Betty will surely be missed and fondly remembered! - Posted by: Colleen Allen (Family Friend) on: May 27, 2013

  • I'll miss Betty's sparkling personality, sharp wit and positive outlook. There was no mistaking her razor sharp humor and clarion voice when she called over the phone. If only I'd known of her singing abilities, would have prompted her to demonstrate! We enjoyed having her over and visiting Bill and Betty at their Wpg Beach cottage. The world is a smaller place without free spirited souls like Betty. - Posted by: Kelvin Nedokis (family friend) on: May 27, 2013
