JOSEPH DENIS (JOE) COTTREAU Joseph Denis "Joe" Cottreau, aged 73. Born in Wedgeport, NS, recently of Halifax. Passed away with loving family and friends at his side on March 18, 2013 in Halifax. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years, Billie in 2008 and his brother Jackie in 1989. Joe is survived by his son Robert, daughter-in-law Sandy, granddaughter Amber, sister Sally (Del), many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a devoted husband, a caring father, a doting grandfather, a thoughtful uncle, and a true friend. His life presented him with the opportunity to experience many things from world travels to diverse careers across Canada and allowed him to make so many good friends. He met and married Billie Allyn (Innes) in 1967 in Toronto and they welcomed Robert into their lives in Montreal in 1970. Joe moved from Toronto to Winnipeg in 1985, returning to Billie's home town, where he worked for many years with the Provincial Government of Manitoba before taking a job with the Workers Compensation Board. In 1995, he accepted a job with the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia, allowing him to return to the province of his birth. Throughout his career, he was an enthusiastic advocate of Acadian and French history and culture as well as an advocate of environmental sustainability. Joe loved visiting and spending time with his family, experiencing world cultures in his many travels, and passionately pursuing his professional aspirations for the benefit of all. He remained active in barbershop quartet singing, greatly enjoying the music and fellowship. He truly lived to the fullest. He will be remembered for his relaxed manner, his cheerful disposition, his big hugs, and his goofy sense of humour. Bon voyage Papa. An interment service will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 2:30 at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave, reception in remembrance of Joe to follow. Donations in memory can be made to the Alzheimer Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Canadian Diabetes Association. On-line condolences: passages.winnipegfreepress.com

I first met Joe when he joined the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen. In 1988 I left Winnipeg to work in Halifax. Years later, after Joe and Billie were long-settled in NS, our paths crossed and I "re-introduced" him to Barbershop singing with City of Lakes Chorus (of which I am a member since 1989) in Dartmouth, NS. Joe's high level of priority to his family never failed to impress me. Also, the exemplary level of devotion which Billie and he showed for each other was heart-warming. He was a kind man of gentle nature, good humour and integrity. His friendship will always be a source of good memories to me - Posted by: Paul Brennan (Fellow-Barbershop Harmony singer and friend) on: May 31, 2013

I worked with Joe for several years at the WCB, during that period and after my wife, Marie, and I were friends of Joe and Billie. As was Billie, Joe was a kind, decent individual who could always be counted on. They were the kind of people that give humanity a good name. Both Billie and Joe were very proud of their son, Robert. I am saddened by his passing, and will remember him for the rest of my time. - Posted by: Graham Lane (Friend) on: May 27, 2013
