ADELINA MEHMEL (nee JANZEN) 1921 2013 On May 30, 2013, serenaded with hymns of praise surrounded by three generations, Adelina peacefully joined her daughter Carol. Adelina was born on February 24, 1921 in Slavograd, Russia. Parents David and Maria Janzen, Adelina and siblings Dave, Herman, Waldemar and Eddy immigrated to Watrous, Saskatchewan. Adelina worked hard all her life. As the only girl, her day did not end with work in the field. She was expected to work in the home. Her childhood experiences shaped her feisty nature and sense of humour. At age 20 she came to Winnipeg to pursue a career in nursing at Concordia Hospital where she met Rudy. Adelina had an array of talents from spade to hammer to needlework, and was blessed with natural intelligence. She was the rock of the family. She was known in Old Kildonan for her popcorn balls every Halloween. Her passions included reading, gardening, church, and looking after her grandchildren. Adelina is survived by Rudy, her husband of 69 years, her children, Linda Burdett, Connie (Mark Koenker), Richard (Donna), Ron, Allan (Kerstin), Corinne (Dorlan Oxelgren) and Angela (Rob Stangl), as well as grandchildren Laura (Grant Kupfer), Jeremy, Kristin (Dominique Grimard), Colin, Brian, Jeff, Tarra (Richard Little), Jessica (Jeff Clemente), Atom, Kohl and M and great-grandchildren Brandon, Dixie, Austin, Jordan, Amariah, Laya, Kaitlyn, Peyton, Darcy, and Jersey Lee and two great-great-grandchildren. The family is grateful to Riverview Health Centre and especially to Dr. Paul Kerr of CancerCare Manitoba. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 at the Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran World Relief. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 www.nbardal.mb.ca

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I remember what a very nice lady Mrs. Mehmel was, way back then in the 50's. My condolences to the whole family upon losing such a great wife, mother and grandmother. - Posted by: Aurlie Young ( Coldstream, BC.) (School friend of Linda when we lived in Starbuck. ) on: Jun 06, 2013

  • Very sorry to hear about your family's loss. Our son Catlan often tells stories of how he used to help them get their car out of the ditch on cold, slippery winter days. He would often say as he looked out the window: "Guess I have to put the jacket and boots on, the neighbor is stuck in the ditch again! Will miss seeing them outside to say "hi" to. - Posted by: Jack and Terry Eshelman and Family (Neighbors across the street) on: Jun 04, 2013

  • Our thoughts are with you all during this time of sadness. Jacquie & Leigh, Samantha & Nicollette - Posted by: Jacquie & Leigh McBain & Samantha & Nicollette Kruchak () on: Jun 04, 2013

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Mehmel and the entire Mehmel family at this time. We will always remember Mrs. Mehmel as a sweet, feisty and intelligent lady who loved her family and her flowers and gardening. I will never forget how she sent me a peony for my own garden from hers! May the treasured memories you have with this special lady fill your heart with comfort and peace. - Posted by: Melissa & Kevin Perkins (Family friend) on: Jun 04, 2013

  • Sad to learn Mrs. Mehmel passed away. I have known the Mehmel family almost my whole life, as I went to school with Angela, and Ron was once my brother-in-law, and my nephew Jeff's dad. Her popcorn balls were indeed legendary, and I would drag an exhausted Jeff over to Grandma's house on Hallowe'en so I too could get a popcorn ball! I also remember attending Angela's birthday party where Mrs. Mehmel hid wrapped nickels and a quarter in the angel food cake. I thought that was fun! Many of the Mehmels also joined us Aldersons for Christmas dinner over the years. So many losses in the past year for you all - my deepest condolences.
