HAROLD EINARSSON Peacefully on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 Harold passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre. He leaves to mourn his partner Crystal, brothers Rexie (Dreda) and David, sister-in-law Isabelle and many nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his wife Blanche (Danielson), his parents Gudmunder and Elin, sisters Lauga, Asta (Ken), Stina (Ted), Nello (Russell), sister-in-law Gina, and brothers Dori (Martha), Joe (Didda) and Raymond. As a precocious child, Harold made sure that his three younger brothers understood that he was the Boss' in Arborg. While staying with his brother-in-law, who he idolized and was a pilot in the R.C.A.F., Harold decided he wanted in on the action of the Second World War. Under-aged, he joined the R.C.N. and served on a tug in Vancouver harbour. Being a cook, he was entitled to wear officer regalia and one of his duties was to allot crew members their daily rum rations. In the long run, this almost proved fatal as Harold drank one (well, maybe more than one) too many drinks and had to seek help. He was a sober friend of Bill W. for 50 plus years and was always willing to help others. He was a successful entrepreneur, owning and operating "Harold's" barber shop and beauty salon, which grew into a multi-chair business in the West End. Whether you needed a hair cut or not, it was always fun to visit Harold and Blanche at the shop for Icelandic' coffee. He was also part-owner and manager of the SS Lord Selkirk (it was almost a successful venture). Harold was adventurous, with a love of the water and the North typical of a Viking. He worked in the Arctic (DEW line), made several trips to Iceland, was in the Antarctic, travelled down the Mackenzie (on an oil exploration ship), crossed the Atlantic on the QE2, returned on a Concorde, and visited Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Tokyo. Harold was a story teller, a dapper gentleman and a smooth dancer. After Blanche died, these traits served him well as a social escort on board cruise ships. He danced his way across the Pacific to Fiji and Australia, through the Panama Canal, around Cape Horn and on the Baltic, with stops along the way. Closer to home were cottages on the waters of Lake Winnipeg at Glen Bay and Ponemah, where he hosted many family get-togethers. He was an active and enthusiastic participant in the Icelandic community and in politics (the Liberal party), a past-president of the Manitoba Hair Stylists Association, planned and supervised the construction of one of Arborg's symbols, the Curling Rock, and sponsored the family annual invitational golf tournament. Harold had a deep love for the two special women in his life and treasured them. He was devoted to his siblings and spent caring times with his sisters. Harold was always available for his nieces and nephews and had a marked influence on them. His friends were dear to him. A lasting tribute to his family is the burial plot that he established in Arborg and which bears the names of his parents and siblings. Harold marched to his own drummer, with a zest for life and people. He will be deeply missed. Harold's family wishes to thank Dr. Hasdan and the staff at Deer Lodge Hospital for the medical and compassionate care they gave him. A celebration of Harold's life will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) on Saturday, June 15, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, friends so wishing may send a donation to Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 9Z9, the Salvation Army (Manitoba Division) http://www.salvationarmy.ca/ or the United Way of Winnipeg, 580 Main St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 9Z9 in Harold's memory. Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Our condolences to Crystal and the entire Einarsson family. We are currently out of province and unable to attend the service, but our thoughts are with you all. As stated in the obituary, it was Harold who was responsible for the building of one of the symbols of Arborg, the world's largest curling rock. He did this to honour the high school boys teams that won the Provincial High School Curling Championships.. Our thanks to Harold, and be assured that the Town of Arborg will maintain it to his high standards. ....Sincerely, Randy (Mayor of Arborg) & Heather Sigurdson - Posted by: Randy (Mayor of Arborg) & Heather Sigurdson () on: Jun 15, 2013

  • As a young child my brothers and I would march down to Valour Road to Harold's shop. As a child I wondered why Harold wasn't an Uncle as he always us as family. Harold was a special guy to have in your life. As rebellious teenagers my brothers and I were not always in satisfied with the length of our cuts. However, his encouragement and support meant a lot in those days. Family meant a lot to Harold. We visited Wpg last week and I pointed out Harold's to my adult daughters. They may not have understood how a family barber contributes so much to community and kin. We'll all miss his special spirit and friendship. - Posted by: Mark Thorvaldson (Family friend) on: Jun 12, 2013

  • Oh boy, those good old days at "Harold's." I really never felt like an employee, but a member of the "family" that we all created there-circa-1979! We were a bunch of kids, taken under the wing of Harold and Blanche and their beloved dog Petey. Those were fun years, that instantly bring a smile and a giggle, at the thought of those years. Thanks for the memories, and for being part of my life, your were truly a mentor and inspiration! xo - Posted by: Debbie Richter-Strecker (Employee and friend) on: Jun 11, 2013

  • Our deepest sympathy and condolences to Crystal and Harold's entire family. We were do saddened to hear of Harold's passing. He was one of the nicest most gracious people we were privileged to have known. Harold had many many wonderful stories he shared with us regarding his most exciting positions of being one of the best dancing partners on various cruise lines. Everybody loved Harold We shall miss you friend Gordy & Joyce - Posted by: Gordon & Joyce Peterson (lifelong friend) on: Jun 11, 2013

  • Harold was not only a good barber but he was a great guy too! When I moved to Clifton Street in the early 60's I needed a barber. So I found Harold in his small shop on Sargent Ave. I continued to go to Harold for years and I moved to his new shop at Ellice & Wall Street as a very satisfied customer. He was way ahead of the industry when he opened up his new multiple chair shop and beauty salon. I think all the big players of today copied Harold's blue print. In all the times I went to Harold I never had an Icelandic Coffee. I always wondered what it was like. I would like to express my condolences to the family. Harold, Manitoba will miss you buddy. - Posted by: Wade Christensen (customer) on: Jun 08, 2013

  • I had the distinct pleasure dealing with Harold for 8 years and I believe not once did we actually set up an appointment, but it was always a pleasure to sit and listen to his stories and I always made time for him and I never ever minded him not having a scheduled appointment because I always felt I could make time for Harold. I am no longer working at the branch that I dealt with Harold and have missed him. My deepest sympathy to your family for your loss I am sure he will be missed. - Posted by: Janette Lantz (Financial Services Officer - Cambrian Credit Union.) on: Jun 08, 2013

  • It has been many years since I left Winnipeg but I still remember Harold who was my barber for a number of years. When I think of him I can still hear his hearty laugh and great sense of humour. Even if his jokes weren't funny, it was impossible not to join him, scissors in one hand, comb in the other and head back in a fit of mirth! Harold was a true character and a credit to his Icelandic heritage. - Posted by: Jeff Braid (Customer) on: Jun 08, 2013

  • I was 19, walking down the street and saw a sign, "Harold's" and went in for a haircut. Harold took one look at me and said, "You're one of Marg's girls!" He asked me what I was doing and I said "looking for a summer job." "Well now, look at this list and tell me what you'd like to do." The list was cocktail waitress, waitress, chambermaid, and deckhand. I said I wanted to be a deckhand. Harold laughed his booming laugh and nodded. That is how I became the first female deckhand in the history of the MS Lord Selkirk.... Thank you Harold.... Diane Alexander - Posted by: Diane Alexander () on: Jun 08, 2013
