SUSAN (SUSANNA) GURNEY (nee ZACHARIAS) It is with great sadness but hope that comes from believing in God, that we announce the passing of Susan Gurney, on June 2, 2013 at the age of 80 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Alan, her sons and daughters Quentin and Lillian (Angelina, Liana, Julia and Sarah) Gurney, Wanda and Arnold (Nathan and Janelle) Loewen, Wendy and Rick (Jordan and Brielle) Funk and Sterling and Christin (Faith, Caleb and Josiah) Gurney; as well as her brother Frank (Hilda) Zacharias, her sister Agatha, many nieces and nephews, in-laws and friends. She was predeceased by her brother David and her sisters Elizabeth (Betty) and Maria (Marie). Susan was born on November 16, 1932 on her family's farm in Gretna, MB. She started school at Eigenhoff and later completed her high school education at the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg. Following her high school graduation, she completed one year of teacher's training at the Normal School in Winnipeg and one year at Canadian Bible College. She married Alan Gurney on June 24, 1960 at the Central Alliance Church in Winnipeg. She taught for many years until committing herself to the needs of her growing family as a stay at home Mom. They lived in downtown Winnipeg prior to moving to North Kildonan in 1971 close to John Pritchard School where Al taught for more than 25 years. Susan devoted herself to raising her children and was committed to encouraging their education and Christian faith. She volunteered for many church activities in Central, Southdale and Cornerstone Alliance Churches, More recently, Susan organized the volunteer schedules for the Kildonan MCC Thrift Store. She enjoyed many family trips and cherished her time with her children and grandchildren. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Eastview Community Church at 3500 Devries. Burial will take place at the Mennonite Memorial Gardens, 61 Linacre Road on Wednesday, June 12 at 10:00 a.m. and is open to everyone who wishes to join the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Sunday School Mission (CSSM), 189 Henderson Hwy, Winnipeg, MB R2L 1L7 or to the MCC Kildonan Community Thrift Store, 445 Chalmers Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2L 2C9.
