JOHN WILLIAM WALLACE June 23, 1920 - June 4, 2013 Peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, John (Jack) passed to heaven at the age of 92 years. Jack was loved and honoured and will be greatly missed by his children Patricia Howard (Wayne), Judy Vivian (Bill), Scott (Donna) and Dawna (David Brown), as well as his grandchildren Michael, Alissa, Taylor, Jaden, Sarah, and Jason. He is also survived by sister-in-law Jackie Fleming of Calgary, and many nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Elaine (nee Fleming), and his sister Peggy Stothard. Jack was born on June 23, 1920 in Alonsa, Manitoba. His family moved to Brandon, Manitoba when he was eight years old, where he spent his childhood years with his parents and sister, Peggy. Jack met Elaine from Minnedosa, Manitoba and the legacy of a full life began. They married on May 24, 1946. Jack built their first home in Brandon, and they started their family there with Patricia. A career promotion moved them to Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where Judy was born. When they settled in Winnipeg, Scott and Dawna joined the family. Jack had a rewarding career. Starting as a salesman for Coca-Cola, he changed to wholesale groceries, building a successful career in management with the Codville Company, Federated Co-operatives Limited, and Interprovincial Co-operative Limited. A highlight of Jack's life was the opportunity in 1966 to be part of a Canadian Government task force studying consumer co-operatives in British Guiana (Guyana). This resulted in moving the family to Guyana in 1967 on a one year project to set up the first Co-op supermarket. Upon arriving home to Canada, Jack transitioned into small business, purchasing Overhead Door Sales, and Outdoor Motor Sales in 1971. He thrived in this stage of his career as well, and became a wise advisor to the next generation. Jack's favourite pastime was building. The cottage he built at Falcon Lake is a place he was proud of and an outlet for many different projects. Jack perfected docks, decks and stone walls. Jack and Elaine enjoyed travelling with family and friends. His slide shows after a trip were well known, and were accompanied with an interesting dialogue of the country. They met many friends and kept those friendships. The family would like to thank Dr. Mare, CancerCare Manitoba, Compassionate Care, and Riverview Health Centre for their care and support. Also, many thanks to the staff of West Park Manor for enveloping Dad during Mom's stay there. And, to all Dad's Deerfield Village friends and neighbours, please know that you have THE most awesome community!! In lieu of flowers, a donation to CancerCare or a donation of your choice would be greatly appreciated. A service celebrating Jack's life will be held on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Cremation has taken place. • Jack was a PIP! What a guy! There are so many memories of times we spent together. When we moved into Deerfield Village years ago, we were invited to a Birthday Party for our new neighbour. We thought Jack was turning 60, but turned out he was celebratig his 70th Birthday. He was always so vital, so keen, so young in spirit, that one never thought of age with Jack. Our times spent with Jack & Elaine came to include Florida, with bridge & golf, & many escapades. He was a great coupon advocate, & often supplied Arby's delights, purchased with the help of coupons. Every time we go to Arby's, even after all these years, I always think of Jack. We were so fortunate to have been neighbours of your Mom & Dad, & to have a long friendship with them. We even had some good times together in Mazatlan, Mexico, when they were able to have a visit with us there. Memories of Falcon Lake sleepovers, & Jack's special poached eggs with stewed tomatoes, served up with style. His endless enthusiasum for building docks, & anything with concrete, just revealed his love for life & zest for living. Working hard was just a way of life for Jack. We feel so honored to have met your Mom & Dad, & shared so many wonderful times with them. Both your Mom & Dad knew how to live fully & enjoy each & every day. Lucky for us, was the day we became neighbours & friends. We send our Love & sympathy to all of you, whom, we have also been lucky enough to meet & know. This will be a very sad time for you all, the end of an era. However, the legacy of Jack & Elaine will live on through their many friends & all of their Family. Please know that we are saddened by your loss, & send our very best wishes for you to remember & enjoy all the Great times enjoyed with your parents. They have left very big footprints in the sand. We also want you to know that we valued our friendship with your Mom, what a great Lady she was. We are only sorry that we did not know of her passing at the time. • Forever remembered, Jack! - Posted by: Sandra Yau (Neighbour at Deerfield Village) on: Jun 09, 2013

  • Jack was truly an inspirational man on so many levels. His devotion to Elaine, his thoughtfulness as a neighbour, his building skills, his vicegrip handshake, his energy and fitness in his elderly years that would surpass most twenty year olds, his willingness to help his neighbours, his advice on where the best gravel sources were for mixing concrete....his favorite building material, his lust for life and his pride in his family. These are just a few examples of the great man and friend that was Jack Wallace.. Thanks for all that you did for the May family.. Our sincere condolences to the Wallace family. - Posted by: Ross May (Neighbour / Friend) on: Jun 09, 2013

  • Mr. Wallace was the greatest 'putterer'...always had a project on the go at the cottage...rarely was he idle until it was cocktail time....many fond memeories at the Wallace cottage...thoughts and prayers...sincerely Dawn McClure - Posted by: dawn mcclure (falcon lake neighbor) on: Jun 09, 2013

  • Jack was truly one of the finest gentleman I have had the pleasure to know, and definitely one of the best neighbours. For almost 55 years Jack has been our 'go to' man for all building advice, tools, and great conversations down at Falcon Lake. There was never a building challenge that he was shy to take on, even if it was something that we needed done. Jack took on a project of helping us rebuild our deck down by the water and the result was a masterpiece that will last another 30 years. He loved to build. His building projects are legendary, and his stonework masterpieces. We always knew Jack had a smile on his face if we heard hammering, sawing, or a chainsaw buzzing. He was a man in motion. I'll be sure to celebrate his life with a rum and coke, his 4:00 o'clock special. We were blessed to have someone as kind and generous as Jack for a neighbour. Both he and Elaine will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Gordon May (Cottage Neighbour) on: Jun 08, 2013

  • My heartfelt condolences to all of you with the passing of your father. Jack was a wonderful man who was full of enthusiasm for life and adored his wife and family. He loved the summers at the Falcon Lake cottage where his talented projects will live on for generations to come. Although the original pioneers of Falcon lake are now gone (George/Ada Menzies, Margaret/George/May and Jack/Elaine Wallace, they have left us with a lifetime of warm and wonderful memories of our lives together on Montague St and Falcon Lake to cherish. • It is with deep sadness that I learn of Jack's death. My thoughts and prayers are with you - his family, during this time of sorrow. Jack had a wonderful gift for supporting others and putting them at ease. His obituary speaks of a life well and fully lived. Yes, Deerfield Village will not be the same without Jack. We will miss him. - Posted by: Henrietta DeCuypere (friend and neighbour) on: Jun 08, 2013
