PAT BRITTON
Born: Jan 24, 1925
Date of Passing: Jun 13, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPAT BRITTON It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Pat Britton. She died on June 13, 2013 at Seven Oaks Hospital. She was 88. Christened Peggy Patricia Jennings, Pat was born on January 24, 1925 in the village of Dibden Purlieu in Hampshire, England; youngest daughter of Henry Jennings and Vera Hill, predeceased by her sister Norah and brother John. At 16 she had begun working in a millinery shop when the Second World War broke out. Pat endured heavy air raids in Southampton and London in the early years of the war and in 1943 she joined the Women's Land Army. It was while working on a Land Army threshing gang in Tunbridge Wells, Kent that Pat met her future husband. She and Herb both attended a New Year's Eve dance. They were married in Bromley, Kent on June 1945. It was a sweltering day in August of 1946 when Pat arrived in Headingley. Alone, she had crossed the ocean on the Queen Mary and travelled by train across the country to join Herb. She quickly grew to love her new home. She and Herb had three children and she embarked on a long, rich full life centered on family, friends and community. She was involved in all the local organizations that frame small town living: The Women's Auxillary, the Headingley 4-H Club, Home and School Associaton, the Phoenix Community Centre and in her later years, the Headingley Library, the Historical Society, the Over-55 Club and their numerous projects throughout the years. With Herb as her chief contractor she created a beautiful, serene home on the banks of the Assiniboine River in Headingley. Pat was "Fashion Forward" and loved to dress for any occasion, frequently in an outfit she had made herself, as she was a talented seamstress and knitter. She loved her book club and reading; cooking and food, and thoroughly enjoyed the trips she and Herb took together in the "golden age of airline travel." Barbados was a particular favourite spot for Pat and a place where she and Herb and many friends and relatives spent some wonderful vacations. She will be profoundly missed by her husband of nearly 68 years, Herb; her son Stephen (Betty Ann Orr), her daughter Susan, and her son Matthew (Michele Hultzer); and her grandchildren Paul, Eliot, Daniel, Rebecca, Spencer, Tim, Jonathan and Julia. The family would like to extend their thanks to the doctors, nurses and all the staff at the Seven Oaks Hospital, Victoria Hospital and Grace Hospital, as well as to Headingley Homecare Services. A Memorial Service will be held at the Headingley Community Centre on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat's memory may be made to the Headingley Library.
