THE REVEREND EUGENE MARTIN SAUNDERS
Date of Passing: Jun 17, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryTHE REVEREND EUGENE MARTIN SAUNDERS Eugene was born in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles on June 4, 1926. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (2007); his parents Elizabeth (1962) and Frederick (1964); his sisters Zelma (1904), Alviena McCallum (2001), and Dorothy Williams (2006); and his brothers William (1908), Reginald (1918), and Keith (1922). He is survived by his daughters Patricia (Bryan) Walker of Oakbank, MB and Donna (William) Bennett of Tsawwassen, BC. Gene, as his father liked to call him, was raised and educated in Windsor Ontario. Over the years, further education was attained at London Teachers' College, Humber College, and Ryerson in Toronto and St. John's College in Winnipeg. He taught Music and Physical Education in Windsor Public Schools from 1947 to 1951. From 1951 on, Gene worked in broadcasting in private radio and television until 1963 when he joined the CBC where he served in sales and latterly administration in Windsor, Toronto, and Winnipeg, retiring in 1999. It was in Winnipeg where he received encouragement to serve Christ from his parish priest at St. Peter's Anglican Church and from the late Bishops Barry Valentine and Walter Jones. In 1983, Gene was ordained and served over the years as Honorary Assistant at St. Peter's, St. Mary Magdalene and St. John's Cathedral. Outside of church affairs, he was a member of the Winnipeg Naval Officers Association of Canada. He had served as Recruiting Officer (Reserve) at HMCS Hunter in Windsor for a number of years. Gene and the family loved to travel and over the years have seen most of Canada and the United States. They also visited Hungary where Margaret was born and Curacao. The family eagerly awaited spring each year to plant vegetables and flowers. Gene also had a great love for God's creatures: he was especially fond of cats and dogs. The family thanks Dr. Richard Blouw, the nurses, and health care aides of Unit 4 North at Victoria General Hospital for their continued and compassionate care. The family also thanks the staff, residents, and home care team at The Waverley for their love, affection, and support. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, June 24 at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 755 Elm Street. Expressions of condolences may be sent to condolences@nbardal.mb.ca. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to The St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation D1003, 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6 or The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund, Anglican Church of Canada, 80 Hayden St., Toronto, ON M4Y 3G2. Eternal Father, strong to save, whose arm hath bound the restless wave, who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep, its own appointed limits keep: O hear us when we cry to thee for those in peril on the sea. It is a sad story to read of Gene's passing this month. I worked with him at the CBC in Wpg. for several years. We had many good times at the 8th floor office of CBC - Wpg. After I left the CBC I would stop by the 8th floor in the Mall Centre and go for coffee or visit some. My condolences to Patricia and Donna!!!
