B. MYRTLE BARGERY (AVISON) May 31, 1908 - June 26, 2013 Our beloved sister, aunt and friend, Bessie "Myrtle" Bargery, passed away peacefully June 26, 2013 at the age of 105. She was the daughter of the late J. Chester and Bessie (Lewis) Avison. In their early years the family resided in Dugald, Winnipeg and St. Ouens. She was predeceased by her husband Alec on July 1, 1993, as well as three brothers, Joe Avison, Frank Avison and John Aven, two sisters, Mary McBride and Sadie Kelbert-Price, nephew Jack McBride and great-niece Terry Paxton. She is survived by her dear sister Mildred Zielke of Langley, BC. She will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces, nephews and their families in Canada and the United States. After attending high school in Beausejour, she was employed at the Rupertsland College in Winnipeg. Here she met her longtime friend Helen Parker. During the Second World War, she enlisted in the R.C.A.F. Women's Division, whose motto was "Through Adversity to the Stars". After training in Toronto and Saskatoon she was stationed in Dauphin. Following her military service, she and Alec were married in 1945 and lived in Winnipeg. They enjoyed a healthy lifestyle, walking everywhere since they never owned a car. This no doubt contributed to her longevity, though she would say it was because she always ate porridge for breakfast. During the winter on her way home from church she would stop in at the Charleswood Curling Club to watch one of her favourite sports. The other sport she enjoyed was football and the Blue Bombers were the best! Visiting with Evelyn Cushon and other dear friends, feeding the deer, and sharing raspberries from her garden gave her much pleasure. Family and friends were very important to her and her home was always open with a "Welcome" to all. She was the family's "HUB", keeping in touch with everyone and was a wealth of information on our family history. She played the organ almost every day with a medley of music that included hymns, popular music of her time and would always end with "Jingle Bells" regardless of the time of year. She will be lovingly remembered for her kindness, wonderful sense of humour and quick wit. Having led a Christian life, she is now safe in the arms of Jesus. In her later years she resided at Sturgeon Creek 1 and lately at Oakview Place. Her family is grateful to the staff of these two residences for the wonderful care she received, as well as for their kindness to us. "I meant to do my work today but a brown bird sang in the apple tree. And a butterfly flitted across the field and all the leaves were calling me. And the wind went sighing over the land, tossing the grasses to and fro, and a rainbow held out its shining hand, so what could I do but laugh and go." Author Unknown Until we meet again. Memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 2, at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 4000 Portage Ave. Flowers gratefully declined. • Well, Myrtle you can now be with Alex and the many cats you befriended like Perky so from Me, my Wife and son who you allowed us to maintain your lawn over the many years I know you will be sadly missed and it was our pleasure to know you and meet some of your family and friends and may God bless you! - Posted by: Brian Graham (Friend) on: Jul 01, 2013

  • I will miss your witty humor, beautiful smile, and gracious hospitality! Several years ago at dinner the waitress asked Aunt Myrtle if she would like Shepherd's Pie for dinner. She patted the waitress and said "honey, you keep the pie, just send the shepherd!" Well, Aunt Myrtle you are now with the Shepherd. We are grateful to God for allowing us to experience you all these years. - Posted by: Judge C. Lindsey (Nephew (by marriage) with Moreen Zielke/Lindsey) on: Jun 30, 2013

  • My dear Aunt Myrtle was a very special lady - the favorite Aunt to all of us. So many good memories of being with her at the farm - at Easter, coloring easter eggs, at Christmas, dancing snowballs. She did so many things to make life special. She was tiny but she was mighty - very generous and fun loving. We will miss you Aunt Myrtle. - Posted by: Beverly Taylor Andrews (Niece) on: Jun 29, 2013
