Mrs. Durkee taught me...can't remember what class but I remember her. I went to Ryerson School for grades 4, 5, 6. She took the time to talk to us but when she addressed the class, she called the shots and was patient with me. I then became her paperboy for the Free Press. She was one of my favorite teachers and I'm sorry to know of her passing. I guess I'm several years late with my homework but you gave me the desire to learn and it stuck! That's a good teacher. You also had very cool and chic 70's glasses. Thank you again for the Christmas tip you gave me for delivering your paper. It was exactly what I wanted at the time. Not chocolates or nuts or candies but cash. You are an amazing teacher! - Posted by: Brad Lambert (Pupil) on: Apr 28, 2021

I have many stories about Afke and our summers "camping" at the family farm in the valley. If the cows could only talk!! Hinke, thinking of you, Bev - Posted by: Bev Sievwright (Howard) (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2013

How sad to lose such a vibrant and dedicated teacher. Afke was the grade 6 teacher at Ralph Maybank school where we worked together on class projects. I was the teacher-librarian and always marvelled at her energy level, and creativeness. She loved to teach and helped many children to reach their potential. I am certain Afke will be remembered by many who worked with her or were taught by her. - Posted by: Lillian Pavelick (fellow teacher) on: Jul 03, 2013

So sorry to hear that Afke passed away. Have many fond memories of school bus days and was glad to catch up a little when her Mom was admitted to the local nursing home. She will be missed. - Posted by: Sandra (Howard ) Cavers (Friend) on: Jul 02, 2013

It's a shame that you lose track of people that shared part of your life and only re-find them through an obituary. This is the second classmate this year. After years away, when I returned to Canada, I tried to find people from high school and university but it's been difficult. I wish Afke and I could have reconnected and had a cup of coffee and remembered the old days. Like the day I wrote two essays for Miss Purvis' class, one for me and one for Afke. When Miss Purvis read both out loud, it didn't connect that she was on to the fact that I had written both. That realisation came only many years later. I'm sure, as a teacher, Afke realised it sooner! - Posted by: Janice Handford (fellow student at TGCI) on: Jun 29, 2013
