Elsie was a very dear special lady, so caring & compassionate. She was so very good to me while l lived in the apartment upstairs on McDermot Ave. After I was married to Glen Ruttle, and we had our son, Sean, we shared several Christmas Eves at Pete & Elsie house. I will always remember Pete being the Santa, and everyone listening to hear the bells outside. These were very special times we shared so many years ago. I loved both Pete & Elsie, their warm welcome to their home any time. The last time I saw both of them was @ my mother-in-law memorial, Astrid Ruttle. They looked so well and so very happy. That day stands out in my mind so vividly, and the love they showed me. My thoughts are with Mary, Joan & Diane & families. Sorry for the late posting as I was just made aware of your loss by Diane by a chance e-mail I sent to her. Connie - Posted by: Connie (Ruttle) Andon (special friend) on: Aug 08, 2013

Aunt Elsie was one of seven children born to Andrew and Elsie Halbert. As the eldest child, a great deal of responsibility fell on Elsie's shoulders following the death of her mother in 1927. Although my grandfather was forced to house his children in an orphanage due to their young ages at the time of my grandmother's passing, once Elsie was old enough, the children could return home and it became her responsibility to look after them before and after school. This was undoubtedly a tremendous burden to place on a young girl. Obviously, it was a burden Elsie accepted to keep her family intact. As a married woman, Aunt Elsie and Uncle Pete would throw tremendous parties on Christmas Eve at their large home on McDermot Avenue. These events were tremendous fun and provided an opportunity for family and friends to gather to celebrate the Christmas Season. Attending these celebrations as a youngster and teenager will never be forgotten. My aunt was a kind and gentle soul who was committed to family and friends. In 2011, she lost the love of her life, her husband, Peter, after 76 years of marriage. In an age where relationships, like many other things are disposable, this is a testament to true love. Following Uncle Pete's passing, Elsie's own health began to decline and her last few years were spent at Middlechurch Care Home. Our condolences go out to Joan, Mary, Dianne and all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the passing of this extraordinary lady. - Posted by: Don Halbert (Nephew) on: Jul 03, 2013
