Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJEROME OSCAR RABNETT Jerome Oscar Rabnett (Jerry), 89, passed away at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg on June 29, 2013. Jerry was born on April 25, 1924 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, the son of Frank and Cecily Rabnett. He grew up in Owen Sound, Ontario. Upon completing high school he served in the army during the Second World War. He later earned a B.A. at the University of Toronto and then served as a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force, working as a meteorologist at various postings, including Zweibrücken, Germany and Trenton, Ontario. In 1948 he married Frances Burke of Sydney, Nova Scotia, and in 1959 they settled in Picton, Ontario where they both taught at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute. Jerry was a distinguished teacher of mathematics, becoming head of the department for many years. He was an expert contract bridge player, and for a while he competed at the provincial level. An avid reader, he never had less than a stack of books beside his easy chair. Jerry retired in 1983, but his skill with numbers led him to a second career as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch in Belleville, Ontario. After the death of his beloved wife of 50 years in 1998, Jerry moved to Winnipeg to be with his son Mark. In Manitoba Jerry became an active member of Mark's large, extended family. In his final years he lived happily in the country near Teulon with Ursula Backé and her husband, Gareth Peters. Jerry is survived by his only child, Mark (partner, Horst Backé). He is also survived by his sister, Joan Myatt (wife of Herbert Myatt, deceased) of Owen Sound. Cremation will take place at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, West St. Paul, Manitoba. Instead of a formal funeral, there will be a private family celebration at a later date. Condolences may be made via Mark's Facebook page at: http://facebook.com/rabnett Glen Eden Funeral Home 338-7111

A spirited and kind soul. Interested in talking to people from all walks of life. Intellectual, comical, and generous with his adventures in life. Our lives are more enriched for having known "Gramps". Mark and Horst, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to you. We had the pleasure of working with Jerry at Midland Doherty and learned so much from his experience and knowledge. He was a wonderful guy. - Posted by: Wayne and Flo Cooper (Friends and Colleague) on: Jul 08, 2013

A teacher who realized that the "gifted" students in math could work on their own, so that he could concentrate on those students who needed the inspiration and assistance to complete those insane equations which most of us would never use ever again, outside his classroom, and he made it look so simple. Rest in peace, Jerry! You made a difference to many souls. - Posted by: Jane Few (Student) on: Jul 05, 2013

Jerry was my teacher in Grades 9 & 10 at PECI in Picton. He had a special way with teaching that always made algebra so easy. He never addressed me by name, but always "Mr. Sprague". This dating back to my first day in class when I left my text book behind and he was a no nonsense guy when it came to homework. Impressed that I had borrowed a text book on the bus to complete my homework, he referred to me by that name throughout my years with him as a student. A wonderful teacher who I would bump into now and then in Picton long after I had finished high school. - Posted by: Terry Sprague (student) on: Jul 05, 2013

Jerry was my teacher of mathematics whilst I was at PECI in grades 12 and 13. He was a vivid character, of rapid wit, and an inspired teacher. Thank you, Jerry, for your time with us. - Posted by: John Samuel (student) on: Jul 05, 2013

Dear Mark & Horst, I recall meeting your father on several occasions. He was always up-beat, enthusiastic and very comfortable to be with. I'm sure his former students would have liked his style. Our sincere condolences to you, Horst and family. Michele & Richard Coutts - Posted by: Michele & Richard Coutts () on: Jul 04, 2013
