HANS MARIA STIEFFENHOFER Hans Maria Stieffenhofer, 88, passed away at his home in Winnipeg surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness on July 4, 2013. Hans was born on April 9, 1925 and grew up on his parents, Johann and Anna's family farm on an island, Peters-Aue, in the Rhine River by Mainz, Germany. Hans lost his twin brother, Walter, at 16 months of age and he lost his mother when he was 13 years old. At 17 Hans was drafted as a soldier into the German army and he was fortunate to survive the Second World War. He helped rebuild the farm buildings twice when they were destroyed by bombs during the war and he continued farming after the war ended. Hans married Ruth, nee Reissmann, in 1953 and they raised their three children Agnes, Katharina (Lloyd) and Thomas (Ute) together on the farm. In their early 50s, Hans and Ruth, started a new chapter in their lives, bought a grain farm near Sperling, MB and immigrated to Canada. They both worked together as a team to successfully learn a new way of farming and adjust to a different culture and language. They were frugal and worked diligently to build a successful family farm. Moreover they created a beautifully landscaped farmyard: a little Paradise on the Prairie. Hans and Ruth love and respect nature and have been excellent Stewarts of the land to preserve and increase its value for future generations. They have made lasting contributions to their communities. Hans has been a role model and cornerstone to his family. He was an incredibly generous, inspiring and loving man, not only to his wife, but to his children and grandchildren, Till, Carla, Dorian, Maria, Johannis, Thomas, Jan, Tim and Marc. We are grateful to have shared his life and we thank him for everything he has taught and passed on to us. Hans leaves a legacy of love and respect. We will always treasure his memory and miss him terribly. Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Carman, Manitoba. Interment will take place in the Sperling Cemetery with reception to follow in the Sperling Hall. Doyle's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements. www.doylesfuneralchapel.com
