KAROL BACHMANN 1919 - 2013 Karol Bachmann passed away on July 10 at St. Boniface General Hospital completing a full life that spanned 94 years. Karol grew up in Lwow in what was then eastern Poland and is today the city of Lviv in the western Ukraine. He attended the University of Lwow where he added English and Latin to the Polish and German with which he was already proficient. Towards the end of the Second World War, Karol joined the British Army in Italy as an interpreter and moved to England soon after the war where he married Olga whom he had met while locating his parents and brother in war-torn Germany. Karol's love of languages led to his becoming a teacher, where he quickly established a special talent for dealing with academically challenged students whom he taught throughout most of his career. A newspaper ad for a teaching position with the Norwood School Board brought his family to Winnipeg in 1957. He finished his teaching career with the St. James Assiniboia School Division in 1984. He is particularly well remembered by many of his students for his enthusiasm for teaching Latin. Karol's special passions were his family, stamp collecting and table tennis, usually in that order. He was also very active with St. Andrew Bobola parish in St. Boniface and the Polish Combatants Association. Predeceased by his wife Olga and brother Hans, Karol is survived by his children John (Bev), Sophia Munro (Jim), Elizabeth (Ron McCulloch) and Andrew (Karrol), grand-children Rachel (Maxime), Scott (Cathy), Ingrid (Steve), Krigh (Aileen), Ella (Ken), Christopher (Ghislaine), Aaron (Jenna) and Nolan and 11 great-grandchildren. A big thank you to the wonderful staff at Lion's Place and the many home/health care workers who enabled Karol to live independently and proudly in his last years. Sincere thanks also to the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency staff whose kindness and compassion were greatly appreciated. Mass of Christian Burial for Karol will be held at St. Andrew Bobola Church, 541 Marion Street, on Tuesday, July 16 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice. Mr. Bachmann was an enthusiastic teacher of British History…however, I was anything but his student counterpart 🤣… as he said (many times).. “Carole, you will never pass British History”… he was correct … I never did & not his fault in any way. I ended up taking typing as an option & easily passed that subject…but I will never forget this dedicated teacher who tried his best to share his enthusiasm for a subject that held no interest for me. R.I.P., sir…you tried your best, but understood history isn’t for everyone‼️ - Posted by: Carole Hobson (née Corliss) (Student ) on: Oct 17, 2022

Firstly my condolences to all the families of Mr. Bachmann. I had the privilege of being taught by your father in 1969. He was a wonderful teacher and such an interesting man to know. A great loss to the education field and man-kind. Theresa - Posted by: Theresa O'Toole (Ukraince) (Graduating student 1969) on: Jul 14, 2013

Its been nearly 50 years since I took Latin with Mr. Bachmann. Strangely enough, the rhythms of the derivations of the word " Bellum " still go through my head every once and a while. It is then that I think of Mr. Bachmann and his insistence back then that this was important stuff in today's world. Even more strange, he was probably right as in my travels, I have subconsciously used Latin many times to derive the meaning of words in the various Romance languages. Thank you Mr. Bachmann. RIP. - Posted by: Gary Frost (Former Student) on: Jul 14, 2013

I was a teenager with severe asthma in high school. I was not able to do a lot of the sports that others were capable of performing. High school was and still is a place that teens try to find a social niche that we were comfortable! Mr Bachman approached me in the hall one day and asked if I wanted to play table tennis. I believe he saw I was struggling socially due to my condition. As shy as I was he insisted that I give it a try during the lunch hour. I turned out to be very good at it! Table tennis didn't have the same attraction as the basketball team, so there wasn't a lot of participants. Mr Bachman was so passionate about the game you would think he was coaching an NFL team during the Super Bowl! Mr. Bachman would play against me when there wasn't enough people signing up during the lunch hour. It wasn't long before we were spiking from 15 feet away from the table. This continued for many months, I honestly ca'.t remember why I stopped. I think Mr Bachman became ill and he was gone for the rest of the school year. During one of the games, we were spiking the ball back and forth, I recall Mr Bachman yelling out "Keep moving, don't quit, get under it and expect the unexpected and get back into your stance for the next one!" Although he was talking about table tennis, I have applied those same words to my life. Just when life throws you a spike, you gotta get in front of it and get ready for the next one! Although I am sure Mr Bachman was just talking about table tennis I would like to think it was his way of building the confidence of a fragile teen! He would spend the whole lunch hour with me on many occasions, and for that I am grateful! Thank you Mr Bachman for your time and words of encouragement! You made an impact on my life that i will always carry with me! - Posted by: Rob Sankar (Was my teacher!) on: Jul 13, 2013

Latin was off the standard program by the time I attended SJCI (1969 - 1972), but I did enjoy playing table tennis and remember Mr. Bachmann's encouragement well. He was a good man (I remember the donut sales he arranged at school as well!). As students, we do not often know the full depth of the people we call teacher, and looking at Mr. Bachmann's obituary revealed a man of great depth, experience, ability and compassion. It shone through in who he was as a teacher, and I feel fortunate to have known him during those years. - Posted by: David Organ (Student (SJCI) 1969 - 1972) on: Jul 13, 2013

I had Mr. Bachmann for Latin...a great teacher.. ."-us, -i, -o, -um, -e, -o. -i, -orum, -is, -os, -i, -is." Repetitio est mater studiorum. Also was in the tennis club and watched him and Mr. Murray play some great table tennis. ("It's not ping-pong!") I met him downtown in Winnipeg a few years back. We had a nice little chat about old times. He was still sharp as a tack. May his memory be honoured. - Posted by: Barry Carlson (Latin student and table tennis club member 1964-66 SJCI) on: Jul 13, 2013

Thank you Mr. Bachmann for your enthusiastic and compelling teaching skills. You taught a small group of students Latin in 1963-64 when it was previously not offered at SJCI. You changed the world, one student at a time. - Posted by: Ken Varley (Student) on: Jul 13, 2013
