MAVIS BROWN (nee HUDSON) Mavis Brown (nee Hudson) aged 84 passed away at Pembina Place Personal Care Home last Thursday, July 11, 2013. Mavis was born October 9, 1928 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Rosa Grace Page and Arthur William Hudson. Mavis enjoyed competing in races at Laura Secord School. Inspired by the costumes and clothing her mother sewed, she later developed a talent for sewing everything from evening dresses to coats and costumes for her children. Mavis went to Gordon Bell High School and enjoyed going to the Young Peoples group at Greenwood United Church where she made some lasting friendships and met her future husband. In 1953, Mavis hitchhiked across Europe and toured the British Isles for six months, leaving her with lasting memories. In 1954, Mavis married the love of her life, Eldon Keith Brown. In a short time they managed to buy a home on Mulvey Avenue. Besides looking after three children, she swam at the YWCA and played Bridge with the ladies from Young Peoples. In 1967 Eldon made partner at Price Waterhouse and they moved to Fort Richmond. Mavis enjoyed art classes, creating many oil paintings and got to know some ladies in the area playing Bridge and curling at the Pembina Curling Club. During the summer she learned to golf. Mavis volunteered for the Manitoba Cancer Society and enjoyed camping with the family on their many trips across Canada and the United States as well as going to the cottage at Buffalo Point. When Mavis was 65 she was diagnosed with cancer. The diagnosis was not optimistic and we all prepared ourselves for the worst. She faced the biggest battle of her life and won. She learned to cope with her new prosthetic leg and continued going on winter vacations. Mavis was predeceased by her brother Roy Hudson and is survived by brother Harvey Hudson (Margaret-Ann) of Fort Francis, Ontario and sister Joan Tarrant (Rex) of Vancouver, B.C. She also leaves behind her husband, Eldon Brown, daughters Diana Emberley (Bruce), Judy Brown (Peter Sim), and son Cameron Brown (Nancy) as well as her seven grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff on the 3rd floor at Pembina Place Personal Care Home for their caring attention during Mavis' stay there. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society or the Canadian Cancer Society. A Memorial Service, interment and reception will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3K 1W3.
