Born: Oct 23, 1929
Date of Passing: Jul 14, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRUTH ELLEN ALLBUTT (nee MCISAAC) October 23, 1929 - July 14, 2013 Passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 at Betel Home in Gimli, MB. She will be greatly missed by all her children, Clifford (Barb), Bill, Debra (Lee), Jo-Anne (David), Colleen (Mark), grandchildren Billy, Jenny (Kris), Tanya (Greg), Trista (Curtis), Cliffy, Chantel (Joel), Natasha (Jordan) and Amy; great-grandkids Cameron, Chase, Kayden, Emma and Cole. She also leaves behind her sister Pat and brother Gerry, brother-in-law Robert Roche (Donalda), as well as lifetime friends Helen and June. Ruth was born on October 23, 1929 in Sudbury, Ontario and moved at a young age to Flin Flon, Manitoba. After attending St. Mary's Academy in Winnipeg she completed Success Business College before returning to Flin Flon to work for the family business, Midwest Diamond Drilling. After falling in love, Ruth married Bill on June 27, 1953 and remained in Flin Flon until moving to Winnipeg in 1959. In 1966, Bill and Ruth purchased a cottage in Whytewold, Manitoba and in 1979, after several renovations, it became their retirement home. Over the years, Ruth held many positions within the Village of Dunnotar, including civic councillor for 12 years and president of Matlock Community Club. After several years of volunteering she received the community involvement award from the Lieutenant Governor. And on her 75th birthday she received a service award recognizing her years of public service from the premier. In 2001 Ruth and Bill moved to a condominium in Gimli where she shared Bill's remaining years. Ruth was living at Betel Nursing Home for the last several years. And despite suffering from a stroke, Ruth continued her feisty love of life and insisted on continuing with her two favourite pastimes....cigarettes and blackjack. Her family supported her passion by taking Ruth for weekend casino getaways, and Colleen visited Ruth every day at the home to share a coffee and cigarette; being sure to keep Ruth up on all family and local news. Mom / Gramma, you will be missed but we find comfort in knowing that you are with your loved ones once again. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Variety Children's Heart Centre, 2 - 1313 Border Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3H 0X4 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 0K6. There's no doubt in my mind that Ruth passed her passion for life and desire to share and care for others to her family. She taught them well and provided a wonderful example to them, which I've seen in action over the years in both Debra and Jo-Anne. Although she will be missed she will be always be lovingly remembered. - Posted by: Vicki Chatterley (Life long friend to Debra) on: Aug 24, 2013

Deepest sympathies to Deb and family. My Dad was great friends with Ruth and Bill for many years at The Lake. Ruth was always full of energy, fun loving, a real character, and a very caring person. - Posted by: Carol Baxter (Friends from Whytewold) on: Jul 18, 2013

We were up at a cottage when we heard the sad news. But last night as my mom, Betty, was remembering back, she recalled fondly how my dad always said that his greatest dance partner was Auntie Ruth - his jitterbug partner at the Friday night community hall dances. Hopefully they are getting a jitterbug in together again! We miss them all... - Posted by: Joanie McIsaac (Niece) on: Jul 18, 2013

How can you tell the story of a friendship that lasted over 70 years? Ruth and I were so different but we had so many wonderful times together. Ruth spoke her mind and never held back on anything, including her generosity. If I ever needed anything or anyone, she was there. We always had a lot of fun, but Ruth could be trouble if you were in the same class at school. If you weren’t careful, you could end up in the principal’s office. She had a great sense of humour. One time she wrote me from St. Mary’s Academy to say that she was having a “wonderful” time (cleaning the stairs with a toothbrush). We grew up, got married, had children… at the beach Ruth would find beds for all 11 kids (theirs and ours) as well as four adults. I can see her now, cigarette in hand, doling out the cards for another game of poker. For years Bill, Ruth, Ev and I spent New Year’s Eves together. One memorable time in Gimli, Ruth jived up while I jived down, I missed her hand in the turn and broke my wrist…no more jiving after that, but we did love to dance in our day. Ruth was the best friend anybody could ask for. I will always miss her. - Posted by: Helen Smallwood (Friend (we met in Flin Flon when we were 10 years old)) on: Jul 17, 2013

Myself and my husband Steven are very sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Ruth Allbutt. Throughout my time knowing Joanne, Ruth's daughter, I realized and benefitted often, from the strength of character and sincere kindness of heart directly from Joanne. I am sure that much of that came to her from her mother Ruth and the family experiences she had. May her living family be blessed and comforted in her strong legacy!! Warm hugs to Joanne and David in their grief for their mother. Claudia and Steven Eyre of Bresalu, ON - Posted by: Claudia M. Eyre (friend, lucky to be so, of Ruth's daughter Joanne) on: Jul 17, 2013

For Ruth... I am standing by the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a peck of white cloud just where the sun and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, 'There she goes! Gone where? Gone from my sight that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says,'There she goes!, there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout:'Here she comes!' Heaven's Gain Ruth was the epitome of kindness, joy, commitment, opportunities, and values. While growing up and sharing my youth with by best friend Debra, Ruth was a mentor to me, and guiding inspiration. High-spirited, fair, and endlessly giving. Thank you Ruth, for always making time and setting the table for one more. Always smiling thinking of you. Lois - Posted by: Lois Taylor (Friend of family) on: Jul 16, 2013

Ruth and Bill were good friends and neighbours with my family in Flin Flon. I lived with them in Winnipeg when I completed my nurses training in 1964. My sister Bev and I visited them in Gimli years ago prior to Bills passing - had a great visit. Then we also visited Ruth shortly after she had her stroke. I am sure she recognized us - there was that smiling twinkle in her eyes. So sorry to hear of her passing - deepest sympathy to all the family from Verna and Donna - "Potter " girls. Bev passed away last year and we all remembered the Allbutt family over the years. - Posted by: Donna ( Potter) Huska (long time friend from Flin Flon days) on: Jul 16, 2013

My Dad sends his sincere condolences to Ruth's family - he and the McIsaac family go back a long long way and Frank and Greta were friends of Bill and Ruth in their years in Manitoba. I remember baby-sitting for Ruth and Bill long ago in Flin Flon and that they were generous and fun-loving people. We hope that the wonderful years you have all shared will be a comfort in your loss.
