BERNARD JOSEPH SAMMONS It is with great sadness and love that we announce the sudden passing of Bernard Sammons on Monday, July 15, 2013 at St. Boniface General Hospital at the age of 82. Born in Winnipeg on August 13, 1931 to Betty (Björg) Samson and Bernard Joseph Sammons Sr., he was a life-long resident of Charleswood. Bernard was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Ruth (nee Marshall) and will be lovingly remembered by his children, Charlie (Maria), Brian (Leslie), Clare (Candy), Holly, and Kellee (Roger Scott), as well as his grandchildren Joey, Trisha, Blaze, Blake, Brian, Lee, Anthony, Robert, Troy, Crystal, Jay, Travis and Darcy, and many great-grandchildren. Bernard is also survived by his two brothers, Gregg (Jean) and Jonas (Susan) who, along with their deceased brother Clare, shared many fond memories of growing up in Charleswood together. His family was a great source of pride and joy to Bernard and he was always surrounded by their love. As a young man, Bernard attended Chapman School and St. Paul's High School, where he played for the football team. He was an avid hockey player, playing defense for the Victoria Cubs. At the age of 18, he joined the Canadian Pacific Railway, working as a "wiper" on the steam engines. He was soon promoted to "fireman", shoveling tons of coal on the run to Brandon. After the steam engines were replaced by diesels, Bernard worked for Crown Zellerbach, but he eventually returned to the railway and worked in the dining car on the Winnipeg to Vancouver run. With his experience and hard work, he proudly finished his career as a locomotive engineer. After his retirement, Bernard joined the Vintage Locomotive Society, where he eagerly volunteered as an engineer and later a conductor for the Prairie Dog Central Railway and participated in the amazing restoration of vintage steam locomotives. Working with the talented group of like-minded railroad enthusiasts gave him tremendous pleasure and he developed many enduring friendships. Recently, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the Society. The family would like to thank his friends at Sturgeon Creek I, especially Lilyan Lacey for her love and companionship. We also want to express our gratitude to the staff of the Charleswood Adult Day Club, an activity Bernard looked forward to each week, and to the doctors and nurses at St. Boniface Hospital ICU. In keeping with his wishes, there will be a gathering of remembrance to honour Bernard on Friday, July 19, 2013 at the Charleswood Legion, Branch #100, 6003 Roblin Boulevard at 1:00 p.m. "Together as one family, we will carry your memory in our hearts forever." • I met Bernie on the train Dining Car- I was a laid off Brakeman, working temporarily in the passenger service Dept. On a run to Vancouver. We compared notes, on who we knew and worked with out of Winnipeg. I was glad to meet a friendly person with a lot in common. The timeline was early 1970, soon after I was called back to my job and soon after Bernie transferred back to the running trades. We often worked on the same crew. I enjoyed working with him, the job seemed so much easier whenever we worked together. RIP Bernie fellow worker and friend. - Posted by: John Kasian (Worked with Bernie at CPR) on: Jul 19, 2013

  • I know we are all feeling a little bit sad, That we've lost our Grandpa, our friend and our dad Together we have cried an ocean of tears As we feel so empty and hold many fears But Grandpa would want us to know he's in a good place And that he watching us all with a smile on his face As we have made him so proud, as proud as can be That he has raised such a beautiful and special family Thinking back now I really must say I feel lucky and privileged to have known Grandpa to this day For in my life, you have played a special part The memories I will treasure and keep close to your heart Although he has gone we will always be together And his spirit will live on each one of us forever When you look to the sky, look for the brightest star As that will be Grandpa looking down on us from afar And now I would like to thank the good Lord above For blessing us with our Grandpa with his kindness and love Dear God, if it is not too much fuss Take extra special care of our Grandpa as he is very dear to us Grandpa if you are listening say a prayer for us every day Be sure to protect us and guide us on our way We know when God called you, you had to go But we want you to know Grandpa we miss you and love you so I love you grandpa, rest in piece. <3 - Posted by: Blaze Dina Sammons (Granddaughter ) on: Jul 18, 2013
