JOAN BOYD Taken far too soon, Joan Elizabeth Boyd (nee Meakin) our beloved wife, mother and nana passed away on July 20, 2013. She was predeceased by her mother and father Bertha and Fred Meakin, brother Bruce and in-laws Evelyn and Douglas Boyd. Left to mourn is husband Ron, sons Greg (Colleen), Ash, grandchildren Kendra, Breanne and Aaron, sister Ellen (Romeo) Saltiss, brother Brian, as well as many nieces and nephews. Joan grew up in the farming community of Starbuck and upon graduating in 1962, commenced employment with the Royal Bank at Portage and Edmonton where she met Ron, who became her lifelong mate when they married in 1964 and just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary in April. Joan always had a strong interest in the medical field and was eventually enticed by one of her dental customers to leave the bank and work for him. This resulted in a most enjoyable career exceeding 25 years in the dental field as a whole where many customers became lifelong friends and acquaintances. Throughout her life, Joan always took great pride in striving to look her best at all times, which earned her the endearing "Auntie Hollywood" moniker from her nieces. She was always a health conscious person and upon her retirement, both she and Ron became members of the Wellness Centre where she met numerous wonderful people and spent many happy years staying fit. Joan dearly loved her family and was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren. Over the years, both Joan and Ron worked hard to create a lovely and peaceful garden setting at their home, which they were able to enjoy for many years. Regrettably, as time went on, Joan encountered a variety of health and medical challenges but she is now at peace and in a better place. A special word of thanks goes out to the doctors and the third floor staff at Concordia Hospital, who were particularly attentive to not only Joan but also to her family's needs during these last days. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any charity of your choice. To Joan. I wish I had been there for you. You were so beautiful on the outside and also on the inside. We had a lot of laughs in the 30 minutes I did your nails. After all these years you're still in my heart. I still have the earrings you brought back for me on one of your vacations. I know that the night has a new bright beautiful star in the sky. In grade 2 in Miss Major's (I think) class I had the biggest crush on Joan and she would never find out because I was too shy to ever say anything. Nothing ever became of it other than that but there was something special about her that I realized even then. Not surprisingly, thoughts of her drifted in and out of my mind all through my life and I am totally saddened by her passing. So you see we never know where or when we leave a mark in the life of someone. Who would have thought. Had it not been for a mutual friend I would have not been aware of her passing as I did not know her married name. My sympathy to husband, children and her extended family. Very saddened to hear of the passing of Joan. Having been a decades long patient of Dr. S. often it was Joan who greeted you as you entered the dental office with a huge smile and cordiality. I will always remember sitting in the dental chair with Joan nearby making you feel as comfortable as could be with her kind and friendly words.
