META THIESSEN After a long and eventful life, Meta Thiessen, (nee Kramer), passed away on July 24, 2013 at the age of 97. Beloved mother of Elfrieda (Ian) Graham and Victor (Barbara) Thiessen, grandmother to Donald, Alexander, and Mary-Anne Finlayson; Tanya Thiessen-Light and Katie Thiessen, and great-grandmother to Robert, Heather, Kenzie and Naomi Finlayson; Karly and Joey Light; and Thomas, Brianna, Zachary and Zoey Christmas. Born in Gruenfeld, Ukraine on April 5, 1916, Meta, together with her two children, fled to Wiesenbronn, Germany in 1943 and then immigrated to Steinbach, MB in 1948. There the family initially lived with George and Agatha Enns, who, together with Franz and Katherine Hiebert, had sponsored the family's journey to Canada. Both the Enns and the Hiebert family remained steadfast and supportive lifelong friends. A few years later they moved to Winnipeg, where she became a devoted member of the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church. Here she found much strength, help, and comfort from various friends. Her last few years were spent in Donwood Elderly Persons Housing, and there too she found a caring community. Meta was predeceased by her first husband Peter Tschirkov, her second husband Julius Thiessen, and her daughter Katherine. We will all miss Meta's remarkable gift of joyful courage during her life's many hardships including years of communist oppression and the Second World War. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make any donations, please send them to: Family Life Network, 225 Riverton Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2L 0N1. Funeral service will take place on July 29 at 10:30 a.m. in the North Kildonan Mennonite Brethren Church, 1315 Gateway Road, followed by interment at Green Acres Cemetery. Viewing will take place at the church prior to the service.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Meta dear Meta how she loved each of you. I treasure every memory and each opportunity I had to spend time with her. As you spend time digesting the essence of her life thru this journey of grieving may you find the Comforter that she knew so well as her close friend. - Posted by: Janice Smalley (friend) on: Jul 29, 2013

  • Meta was such a lovely lady who touched us all with her winning smile, her courage and stamina, and her joy in life. Many of my memories of Mamma Thiessen take place in many kitchens. Learning to make borscht and pyrogies in my kitchen in Nova Scotia; grinding flour at Barbara and Victor's in Nova Scotia; making hundreds of golubtsy in Kelowna for a wedding; and, of course, making and eating homemade cheese and fleisch peroski in her own kitchen in Winnipeg. I feel this exemplifies Meta's sense of self-sacrifice - lots of work making something for the support and pleasure of others. And always with a big smile regardless of her own pain. Mamma, you have left your mark on many and we will carry you in our hearts and our bellies :) - Posted by: Marilyn Smith (Family friend) on: Jul 28, 2013

  • Dear Elfrieda and Victor and families. Our sincere condolences in the loss of your Mother and Grandmother. You will remember we came together to Canada in December 1948 and sporadically have been in touch with your Mother ever since. - Rest in peace, Meta, in the presence of Jesus Christ, your Saviour and Lord.
