IRENE EVELYN HUNCHAK (nee FEDUN) Irene passed away peacefully at the age of 95 years on July 27, 2013, at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB, after a brief illness. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine, son-in-law, Ron Arnason, granddaughter, Robyn, brother William (Pauline), and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John, granddaughter, Amy, her seven other siblings and parents, Mary and Michael. Born in Beausejour, MB, Irene moved to Winnipeg to study to become a teacher. She met and married John in 1939 and they were married 71 years at the time of Dad's passing. Mom and Dad resided in Geraldton, ON and Fraserwood, MB before settling in Winnipeg. Mom taught school in Feldendorf, worked as a lumber camp cook, served as a driver during the war years, and held various clerical positions. Mom was a dedicated mother and grandmother who enjoyed nurturing her family. Known for her sewing, knitting and needlepoint skills, Mom was always available to offer helpful advice to family and friends. She loved music and played the mandolin at family gatherings. We all loved grandma's cooking, as she liked to try out new recipes. She also enjoyed picking apples and tending to her garden on Dominion Street. Mom was a very kind, caring and generous person who will be forever remembered and greatly missed. The family wishes to give their sincere thanks to the staff of the Health Sciences Centre, Victoria General Hospital and Misericordia Health Centre for their compassion and care. They would also like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence, and especially to Esther and her staff for their excellent care and kindness. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. If so desired, donations may be made in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice.
